Softcover. Condición: Very Good+. No Dust Jacket. 2020 reprint of the 2016 fourth edition, of a title first published in 1950 as "Maori Place Names and their Meanings". 151, [1] pages. Green card covers. Page dimensions: 210 x 148mm. Maps on inside covers. "The previous edition added macrons to long vowels where required. Macrons make all the difference to a name's meaning and pronunciation. Few official places carry macrons as yet, so flexilibity is needed when relating the names listed here to those encountered on maps or signs. In this edition I undertook to update usage as it has evolved over the past 20 years, resulting in revision to numerous entries. There is now more prominent reference to the Maori names of main centres, with inclusion of some important localities (such as Turangawaewae), regions like Te Upoko-o-Re-Ika), and coastal and marine names (like Te Tai-o-Marokura). Additional cross-referencing and maps inside the cover aim to make the book easier to navigate. Revisions have been made to a number of factual and grammatical issues." - from the Foreword to the 2016 edition. Illustrated by Berry, James (ilustrador).
