Añadir al carritoPresumed first edition (no direct statement but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages). xiv, 334, [1] pages. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 16.75cm. No dust jacket. Handsome red cloth; mottling to boards; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains bright. Gilt top edge; deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Personal sextant-themed bookplate of E. Lee Dorsett (St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) on front pastedown; affixed to rear free endpaper is an old b/w postcard titled "Home of Artemus Ward Waterford ME. 87." which is presumably a Dorsett embellishment. It should be noted that the Maine residence was actually the home of humorist Charles Farrar Browne, 1834-1867, who was not a relation to Artemas Ward (with small change to spelling) but chose the appellation as his nom de plume. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm.

Añadir al carritoPresumed American first edition (no direct statement but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages; preceded by a British edition issued by London publisher Victor Gollancz in 1938). 351 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14.75cm. Lacks dust jacket but clipped/trimmed portions of panels, spine, and flaps are tipped-in/affixed to half-title and to lightly toned/soiled front and rear endpapers. Mildly soiled off-white cloth with some foxing and a few small stains. Some soiling to text block's top edge; toning to fore-edge. Personal sextant-themed bookplate of E. Lee Dorsett (St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) also affixed to front pastedown. Dorsett signature at top of ffep; ink markings curiously found on pages 11, 111, 211, and 311 but no others readily apparent upon a cursory perusal; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. In 1828 Frenchman Rene Caillie became only the second European and the first to escape alive from the city of Timbuctoo. For a century most believed Caillie's adventure to be fiction but in 1934-35 Galbraith Welch set out to retrace Caillie's journey and prove his account.

Near top of title page is antiquarian ink signature "Henry Rutgers" (matching examples found online) along with facsimile signature style ink stamp "WB Crosby." Boards and text block secured by trimmed clear mylar dj for presentation. Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S.IANA #C-518. Exceptional Revolutionary War and War of 1812 association via past (and likely original) owner Henry Rutgers (1745-1830), a scion of prominent New York City merchant and land-holding family, who advocated for American independence from Great Britain and served as a captain at the Battle of White Plains later rising to the rank of colonel in the New York militia. Rutgers' post-Revolution years were marked by political involvement and extensive philanthropy as he served in the New York State Assembly and on the New York Board of Education Regents. In June 1812 Rutgers participated in organizing New York forces in foresightful anticipation of British hostilities for the upcoming War of 1812. However Rutgers' donations to Queen's College in New Brunswick, New Jersey which became Rutgers University in 1825 remain his most notable legacy. Further advancing the book's Rutgers provenance is the aforementioned W.B. Crosby ink stamp which would be William Bedlow Crosby (1786-1865) who owned a mansion on Manhattan's Rutgers Place between Jefferson and Clinton Streets and whose parents evidently had a close connection to Colonel Rutgers as Crosby had a short-lived sibling named Henry Rutgers Crosby (1787-1788).
