Quarto. 64pp. Haunting woodcuts by Kurtzman Phelps (here credited only as Kurtzman), plus an enormous initial "I" with flourishing ending in hound's head, recall the Gothic stylings of German Expressionism, here making its way to the northern climes of Midwest America by way of Welsh drama. The only book of the press, printed in Barnhardt's version of Morris Chaucer. Job (1901-1947), though Welsh, moved to America and made inroads as a playwright and screenwriter for Warner Brothers, most notably for the Humphrey Bogart-Barbara Stanwyck vehicle The Two Mrs. Carrolls and the WWII thriller Escape in the Desert. Kurtzman Philips contributed to other Midwest presses, including the Torch Press of Cedar Rapids and the Voyageur Press of Minneapolis. Bound quarter pebbled black leather with black paper over boards, blind-embossed. Stray rubs to covers, else near fine in slipcase, this somewhat worn.
