Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. Photographed over the past decade and a half, Spring Visits: Photographs from Viet Nam, records Don Unrau's travels through the country where he served as a 21 year-old American soldier. In sumptuous black and white imagery, he counters the enduring stigma of the War with disarming portraits of peaceful village life and, in the burgeoning urbanity of Hanoi, snapshots of an entire generation of Vietnamese youth for whom the War is lived as history, however visible. Still, the conflict's specters haunt Unrau's scenes in grass-mended bomb craters and war remnants that have become fixtures of the landscape, as well as images that shore up its horrors, from children selling toy helicopters on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City to a truck emerging from a shroud of fog that unmistakably conjures the smoke of heavy artillery.

This is a regular copy; deluxe copies are also available from Passages Bookshop. In the 1980s, Vietnam veteran Don Unrau created extended portraits of fellow veterans (gathered in his portfolio?War Story, also available from Passages Bookshop). Not long after, he returned to Vietnam for the first time, and then many times.Twenty years later, Don made the thirty-four portraits of Viet Cong veterans in The Revolutionary Moment. As he describes in the short preface:There was a time when Quang Ngai province was not as peaceful as it is today. It was one of the most hostile places for the French during their occupation of Viet Nam. After their victory over France, the communist Viet Cong revolutionaries continued to fight for independence during fifteen years of violent conflict against the United States.During our war, numerous atrocities took place in Quang Ngai, the most notorious at My Lai. With permission from a Quang Ngai veteran's organization, I traveled commune to commune around the My Lai area meeting war veterans to make the portraits in this book. Twenty years of photographing in Viet Nam had made me more at ease around the people I once fought against.Portraiture varies greatly, consequently informing us in many ways. While making these photographs my intent was not merely to reveal their physical presence, but also with empathy to perceive an unexpressed heaviness of war. Both digital and platinum exhibition prints of the portraits are also available from Passages Bookshop, for which prices vary. Añadir al carritoFirst printing. (23) pp., 16 x 20 inches.Twenty archival digital photographs and text printed by the photographer, housed in cloth-covered folding case constructed by Emily GarcÌa of Cathemeral Press, in a signed and numbered edition of twenty copies. As new. Vietnam veteran Don Unrau began working on these extended portraits of twenty of his fellow veterans in 1984, inviting each of the subjects to write a text of any length to be printed along with the image, completing them in 1989 while an artist in residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. The images were exhibited in various venues, and some were published in periodicals; finally, more than twenty years later, he decided to publish the complete images and texts in this portfolio format.By adapting the capability of contemporary fine art inkjet printers to deploy dozens of colors, and using black and grey values in their place (as well as through his choice of papers), Don was able to achieve a striking tonal range in the results, which could almost pass for gelatin silver prints. The powerful images are extended into the realm of stories by the subjects' writings, which range from brief maxims and poems to treatises. As the photographer stated shortly after the portfolio was finished:The portraits, with their handwritten sentences, individualize the emotions, giving viewers the chance for increased understanding of the person photographed. The writings were also an indirect way for me to articulate some of the same feelings that I have had as a Vietnam veteran.WorldCat locates copies in just ten institutions in the United States.(Note: See also Don Unrau's?The Revolutionary Moment: Portraits of Viet Cong, also available from Passages Bookshop.).
