CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler attended West Point and graduated in 1859; joining the 1st U.S. Dragoons, and after attending Cavalry School, was assigned to the Regiment of Mounted Rifleman and posted in New Mexico. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army. As a military commander of the Confederacy, he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theater. Following the war, Wheeler represented Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms, and led U.S. forces during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American Insurrection. REFERENCES: DORN III #1251; NEVINS I pg 82: Wheeler and close compatriots furnished most of the data for this study; as a result, Dodson's study possesses little objectivity.
