Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Near fine condition brown boards with upper and lower front cover embossed decoration & gold front cover lettering. Includes preliminary sections: "Announcement", an October 1893 Howard Publishing document discussing the volume; a section entitled Press Comments consisting of article…s entitled: Sir Francis Bacon's Cipher Story by the Detroit Journal; Sir Francis Bacon's Cipher Story by Mr. Geo. P. Goodale, Dramatic Critic of the Detroit Free Press; The Medicine in Shakespeare by Orville W. Owen, M.D. which consists of extracts from a lecture read at a stated meeting of the Detroit Medical and Library Association; and an article by the Detroit Evening News regarding Bacon's Cipher Story. The upper spine edge is lightly rubbed, much less so for lower spine edge and board corners. All pages are in fine condition and the spine is tight and square. "The Baconian theory of Shakespeare authorship holds that Sir Francis Bacon, philosopher, essayist, and scientist, wrote the plays which were publicly attributed to William Shakespeare. Various explanations are offered for this alleged subterfuge, most commonly that Bacon's rise to high office might have been hindered were it to become known that he wrote plays for the public stage. Thus the plays were credited to Shakespeare, who was merely a front to shield the identity of Bacon. The theory was first put forth in the mid-19th century based on correspondences between the philosophical ideas found in Bacon's writings and the works of Shakespeare. Later, proponents claimed to have found legal and autobiographical allusions and cryptographic ciphers and codes in the plays and poems to buttress the theory. In 1867, in the library of Northumberland House, John Bruce happened upon a bundle of bound documents, some of whose sheets had been ripped away. It had comprised numerous of Bacon's oratories and disquisitions, had also apparently held copies of the plays Richard II and Richard III, The Isle of Dogs and Leicester's Commonwealth, but these had been removed. On the outer sheet was scrawled repeatedly the names of Bacon and Shakespeare along with the name of Thomas Nashe. There were several quotations from Shakespeare and a reference to the word 'Honorificabilutudinitatibus', which appears in both Love's Labour's Lost and Nashe's Lenten Stuff. The Earl of Northumberland sent the bundle to James Spedding, who subsequently penned a thesis on the subject, who subsequently penned a thesis on the subject. Bacon's reason for publishing under a pseudonym was said to be his need to secure his high office. to set up new institutes to which his inductive method could be applied. He needed high office to gain the requisite influence, and being known as a dramatist, allegedly low-class profession, would have impeded his prospects. Realizing that play-acting was used by the ancients "as a means of educating men's minds to virtue", and being "strongly addicted to the theatre" himself, he is claimed to have set out the otherwise unpublished moral philosophical component of his Great Instauration project in the Shakespearean work. In this way, he could influence the nobility through dramatic performance with his observations on what constitutes "good" government. By the end of the 19th century, Baconian theory had received support from a number of high-profile individuals. Mark Twain showed an inclination for it in his essay Is Shakespeare Dead? Fredrich Nietzsche gave credence to the Baconian theory in his writings. Baconian theory developed a new twist in the writings of Orville Ward Owen, M.D. and Elizabeth Wells Gallup. SIR FRANCIS BACON's CIPHER STORY (1893-95) claimed to have discovered a secret history of the Elizabethan era hidden in cipher form in Bacon/Shakespeare's works. Elizabeth Wells Gallup developed Owen's views. A 1916 lawsuit decision holding that ciphers id's by Gallup proved Bacon was author of the Shakespeare canon, awarding $5,000 in damages. - Wikipedia.

2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount unobtrusively adhering at head of reverse. Folded twice. The salutation is to 'My dear Barker', and the name of the recipient is given at the foot of the first page as 'W. B. Barker Esqe'. He thanks him for his 'kind, but too complimentary note'. He…is afraid that Barker's friend, who has clearly requested Layard's autograph, 'sets too much value upon a specimen of such detestable handwriting', but in this matter, 'as in anything else', he will be happy to oblige Barker. He is happy to hear that Barker is 'so much satisfied' with his 'position - it is what few persons are and you may therefore consider yourself truly a fortunate man'. Accompanying the letter are three newspaper cuttings, one long and in two pieces, headed 'DR. LAYARD', another biographical and written during his lifetime, and the third incomplete.

Oblong 8vo. 1 line. On a picture postcard showing the interior of Fradin's "Musée de Glozel" (department Allier). - On 1 March 1924 the farmer Émile Fradin and his grandfather Claude discovered an underground chamber while ploughing one of their fields. In several excavations on the site between 1924 and 1930 Fradin and others d…iscovered more than 3000 artefacts, mostly clay tablets, sculptures and vases. With the help of local amateur archaeologists Fradin claimed the findings to be of Neolithic origin. Once the unusual discovery reached national attention and professional archaeologists got involved, controversies arose. A commission of specialists that was appointed to investigate the site in 1927 declared everything from Glozel with the exception of a few pieces to be forgeries. Fradin was confronted with allegations of fraud but an initial indictment was repealed in 1931 and he successfully sued René Dussaud, a curator at the Louvre and famous epigrapher, for defamation in 1932. Despite several scientific attempts at dating and interpreting the discovery, no conclusive explanation has been put forward until today. A majority of artifacts is now believed to be of medieval origin and some objects have been identified as forgeries, but there are also objects dating to the Gallo-Roman and Celtic period. The most remarkable and enigmatic artefacts from Glozel are some 100 tablets bearing inscriptions. The symbols are reminiscent of the Phoenician alphabet but they have not been conclusively deciphered. - Well preserved.

19pp, foolscap 8vo. On five bifoliums. Neatly and closely written. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Tower's letter begins: 'My dear Dick | I enclose a chart [not present] which will show you at a glance my yachting cruises during the past season'. The rest of letter consists of extracts from Tower's diary, 4 April to 12… September 1901, describing with the care one would expect from an engineer, 'one of the best long vacation cruises on record', and ending with a table of 'Distances sailed by me in Gwnfa', from Brightlingsea to Harwich, Antwerp, 'Abortive attempt from Flushing', Flushing, Dover, Portsmouth, Dieppe, Maestrand, Copenhagen, Kiel, Brunsbutell, Hamburg, Cuxhaven, Lowestoft', totalling 2135 miles. Tower adds this to the total steamed in another ship ('Ingani'?), 'making a grand total for the seaon of 1901 of 3508 miles'. In businesslike fashion Tower notes times, position, weather, and significant incidents. A representative entry reads: 'Tues 13th. Very fine weather Lat 54.40 N Long 6.22 E by obs. At noon | Wind dropped at 4.pm. We were amongst a fleet of German steam trawlers. Sent a boat to one of them and got a bucket full of fine Plaice | becalmed all night'. See Tower's obituary in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, vol.162 (1905) pt 4, which describes his connection with the sea, his 'principal work' being 'the gyroscopic "steady platform" for guns and searchlights [] The device was submitted to the Admiralty, and after being thoroughly tested, was fitted to two gunboats, on which it answered very well; but ultimately the Admiralty rejected the apparatus on account of the extra weight involved [] Mr. Tower nevertheless proceeded to adapt the platform for passenger-seats on cross-channel steamers'. The recipient Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet (1861-1931) would not succeed to the baronetcy until the death of his father in 1911. Himself a keen yachtsman, he was a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal between 1899 and 1913. From the Harington family papers.

On 30 November 1915 he writes, regarding 'Dr Dugald Clerk's recent excellent Address as Chairman', that he 'wrote Sir Philip Magnus on this same subject in reference to a letter he contributed to "The Times" [] I think this country has done "more than its share" in the science of Metallurgy. Our leading men of science have been kind enough to say that the first great development in steel alloys sprang from my paper "Manganese steel" to the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1888, and the great French scientist, Monsieur Floris Osmond, a person friend of the late Sir William Roberts-Austen, made the remarks given in the enclosed statement P.5694, [not present] which also includes the remarks of several other distinguished men regarding my research work, yet I am certainly not a German.' [?] Readman and I are old friends, & I can perfectly trust him. I told him about your proposal. He has had occasion to consult electrical patents[lately?] to a large extent, & tells me that the process is a new one. I put it to him if we were treading on his toes in the least in making use of his dodges. The answer is no; he says he will be happy to help us in any way. | Now we want to oxidise the arsenic. He confirms what I thought, viz. that there is very little demand for metallic arsenic, but a large demand for oxide. Hence we must make oxide. But we can't admit oxygen into a hot electric furnace without consuming the carbon electrodes, & carbon is the [only?] substance which will resist the attack of sulphide of iron. Drain pipes won't do. Readman has left with me the sketch of his little furnace, & we must take that as a model & alter it to suit our necessities. These are: Heating the [arc?] in the lower part of the furnace; & oxidation of arsenic in the upper part away from the carbons; also condensation of the arsenic fumes. We must have an ent[r]y for air, a region of combustion of the arsenic in contact with some porous substance, which will keep hot [text missing from her]". Notes: a.
