First edition of a controversial work by Denis Pétau containing the results of his historical research on the functioning of Christian clerical authorities (primarily bishops) from the time of the Church Fathers to his own time, followed by a discussion of various questions of dogma. The text contains many citations from Latin a…nd Greek Fathers. It is divided into two "books": liber primus "qui est de episcopis, & eorum jurisdictione, ac dignitate" (pp. 1-160) discusses the very delicate subject of the authority of bishops, a major issue in the disputes between Catholics and Protestants; and liber secundus "in quo certae fidei, vel rerum ecclesiasticarum quaestiones disputantur" (pp. 161-354) discusses various other questions of dogma related to widespread heresies. Pétau was a prodigious author and "one of the most distinguished theologians of the seventeenth century" (Catholic encyclopaedia), with works ranging over chronology, history, philosophy, patristics and the history of dogma. He is now best known for his vast, but unfinished six-volume work on dogma, the first systematic attempt to treat the development of Christian doctrine from an historical point of view. With the foot margin of C5 (pp. 41-42) cut away, with no loss of text, otherwise in fine condition. Gold-tooled red goatskin morocco (ca. 1700?), sewn on 5 cords, each board with a double frame of triple filets with a small decoration on each corner and a larger one outside each corner of the inner frame, spine with the title in the 2nd of 6 compartments and the others richly gold-tooled, gold-tooled raised bands and board edges, marbled paste-downs (straight-combed with teeth spaced 1 to 4 mm apart, in yellow, blue, black and white), gilt edges, headbands in blue and white. With Cramoisy's engraved coupling storks device on the title page (in a cartouche with his arms above - 3 stars above an anchor - and his initials and a star in a heart topped by a cross below), a woodcut headpiece and tailpiece, woodcut decorated initials (3 series) and headpieces built up from typographic ornaments. Set in roman and italic types with extensive passages in Greek. Pages: [24], 354, [8] pp.

The joints are partly cracked but the binding keeps well together. Shallow cracks on spine. The spine label is partly gone. Corners are a bit worn. The title leaf is slightly chipped and a little soiled. A small hole in outer margin of one leaf in the unpaginated preface. Pp. 131/132 in the second part has a tear running from bottom of page through 12 lines of text. Several scattered small stains and cornerfolds. Notes of an early owner on front paste-down. A well-preserved copy of this chronology of world history. "Rationarium Temporum" is an abridged version of the work which was originally published with the title "De doctrina temporum" in 1627.

Avec un frontispice, une page de titre ornée et 7 planches dont une dépliante, représentant une série de portraits en médaillon. Des rousseurs et pages brunies, sinon bon état. Texte en latin. Denis Pétau, en latin Dionysius Petavius, est un théologien et philologue jésuite, né à Orléans le 21 août 1583, mort le 11 décembre 1652 à Paris. Pétau était l'un des hommes les plus érudits de son temps. Reprenant et prolongeant les recherches chronologiques de Joseph Juste Scaliger, il fit paraître en 1627 sur ces questions un Opus de doctrina temporum, réédité plusieurs fois par la suite : une version abrégée, intitulée Rationarium temporum, fut même traduite en français et en anglais, et réimprimée jusqu'en 1849.

Leg. coeva in piena perg. con tit. in oro su tass. al dorso. Qualche trascurabile traccia di tarlo alla legatura, peraltro esemplare ben conservato. L'A. (1583-1652), celebre gesuita…francese, insegnò teologia positiva e si dedicò alla collazione di antichi manoscritti. Da queste attività sorsero gli studi relativi a storia e cronologia che gli procurarono prestigio e grande credibilità in ambito europeo (Filippo IV di Spagna gli offrì infatti la cattedra di Storia al collegio di Madrid). Petavio, a dimostrazione della sopraccitata fama, ebbe un ricco e prolungato scambio epistolare con i più grandi intellettuali del tempo. Cfr. Brunet per altre edizioni.

This is the complete work, comprising Part I Books 1-IX and Part II Books 1-IV, thirteen books in all. The two parts are separately titled and paginated, and each has its own (extensive) index. Part I retains the dedication to D. Ludovico Borbonio, ad Lectorem, indiculus auctorum, and the two 'summa' leaves. Part I pagination is mis-numbered from p.443 onwards. Effectively an abridgement of the great Jesuit scholar's masterpiece 'Opus de doctrina temporum' (1627). Denis [Denys] Petau (1583-1652) studied in Paris under Scaliger and later resigned his lectureship at Bourges to join the Society of Jesus. He spent the majority of his academic career as Master of Divinity at the College de Clermont, the chief Jesuit establishment in Paris. A splendid, if predictably imperfect, copy in wonderful contemporary binding. EXTREMELY SCARCE.
