Frederick Porter Wensley (1865-1949) served as a British police officer from 1888 until 1929, reaching the rank of chief constable of the Scotland Yard Criminal Investigation Department (CID).He was one of the 'Big Four', a nickname given to the four Superintendents in charge of the Metropolitan Police CID, with his murder investigations regularly published in the press. In this book of memoirs he tells graphic stories of how Bywaters, Stinie, Morrison, and many another arch-criminal were brought to justice. He also describes with intimate detail the methods of detectives, and throws light on the problem of crime and criminals. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with damp staining and patches of loss of colour on the fore edge of both boards. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is browned with a 'Reduced to 3/6' sticker below the original printed price. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing and a larger piece missing from the bottom rear spine corner. There is a tear of about 1 1/2" on the bottom rear spine edge and a few other smaller tears on the edges. The larger tears have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.…
