These three special editions come out of four years of discussions, artistic residencies, exhibitions and collaborations between Cameroonian and European contemporary artists, a process that was initiated in 2008 by the artist platform Enough Room for Space (Rotterdam/Brussels/Berlin). Why Cameroon, why this metaphor of import and export and why a magazine, you might ask. These questions lead us right into the middle of things. It was the enthusiasm of Swiss artist Dunja Herzog that first drew our attention to the thriving art scene of Douala. On site in this busy tropical harbour city, we found a surprising diversity of artistic expression ranging from performance to video art to public art, made by artists from diverse parts of the country. We also encountered several smartly set up artist-initiatives that cope with the absence of public infrastructure for studying1, producing and exhibiting visual art, helped by a unique solidarity between artists from different generations and NGOs like Doualart. These observations and the artists hospitality inspired us to relate more profoundly to this place, thus also challenging the generalising notion of Contemporary African Art that is becoming more and more widespread.2 Cest avec grand plaisir que je vous présente la première édition dune série de magazines traitant de limport et de lexport culturel entre le Cameroun et « lOccident ». Ces éditions sont le résultat de quatre années de discussions, de résidences artistiques, dexpositions et de collaborations entre des artistes camerounais et des artistes européens ; un projet initié en 2008 par la plateforme Enough Room for Space basée à Rotterdam, Bruxelles et Berlin. Nous pouvons nous demander pourquoi le Cameroun ? Pourquoi avoir recours à cette métaphore de limport et de lexport culturel ? Et enfin, pourquoi présenter un projet artistique par le biais dun magazine ? Cest tout dabord lenthousiasme de Dunja Herzog, artiste suisse, qui a attiré notre attention vers le dynamisme de la scène artistique à Douala. Arrivés dans cette ville portuaire, tropicale et très active, nous nous sommes laissés séduire par la surprenante diversité des manifestations artistiques, telles que la performance, lart public ou lart vidéo, réalisées par des artistes originaires de toutes les régions du pays. Nous avons aussi rencontré plusieurs initiatives dartistes qui agissent de manière rusée contre le manque criard dinfrastructures publiques pour étudier produire et présenter les arts visuels. De plus nous avons constaté une grande solidarité entre les artistes de toutes générations qui sont aussi aidés par les organisations non-gouvernementales telles que Doualart. Ces aspects improvisés de la scène, ainsi que la chaleureuse hospitalité des artistes nous ont inspirés pour nous investir dune façon plus profonde dans ce contexte tout en défiant la notion généraliste dun « Art Africain Contemporain » qui se répand de plus en plus.
