Der 'Kiewer Spießer' war ein übler Kleinbürger von ganz besonderer Art; er hatte etwas von dem hochnäsigen und dümmlichen polnischen Kleinadel an sich, stand aber auch einer so frechen und scheinheiligen Figur wie Tschechows Jepichodow nicht nach. Aus dem Bodensatz dieser abstoßenden Zwischenschicht der Gesellschaft gingen wilde Fanatiker und Erzreaktionäre hervor. Zu ihrer Hochburg machten sie das Kiew-Petschersker Kloster und als öffentliche Tribüne dienten ihnen winselnde monarchistische Blätter, die von finsteren DUNKELMÄNNERN UND GEWISSENLOSEN Nationalisten herausgegeben wurden.
