With two engraved bookplates, the first of John Fiott, St. John's College, Cambridge, dated 1806; and a second armorial bookplate unidentified. Fiott (1783-1866) was the famed British astronomer, one of the founders of the Royal Meteorological Society, and president of the Royal Astronomical Society 1861-63. This is the first Desprez edition of Horace, a durable work that was still being printed well into the 19th century. Little is known about Desprez, a French scholar and a member of the Society of the Sorbonne, other than his edition of Juvenal & Persius Flaccus first published in 1684, and this lasting edition of Horace.
