Summary:The magnificent art that is the heritage of Nigeria was, for the first time, presented to the world beyond Nigeria at the "Treasures of Ancient Nigeria - Legacy of Two Thousand Years" exhibit at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor from April 27 - June 29, 1980. This book is a record of that exhibit and what it represented. One hundred extraordinary works of art in bronze, terracotta, and ivory - works spanning more than two thousand years, from the fifth century B.C., and representing seven cultures (Nok, Igbo-Ukwu, Ife, Owo, Benin, Tsoede, and Esie) - were selected for exhibition in the United States and are shown here in 137 photographs and plates, 53 in full color. The introduction is by Dr. Ekpo Eyo, Director of Nigeria's Department of Antiquities and head of Nigeria's National Museums, and the interpretive text is by Frank Willett, who taught art and archaeology at Oxford and Northwestern Universities and was formerly an archaeologist for Nigeria's Department of Antiquities and Curator of the Museum of Ife Antiquities.

A scarce first impression of the true first edition - a set of twelve numbered original etchings (plus frontispiece and title-page) by Moyr Smith designed to be used on a set of tiles, each sized: 9cm x 8 cm. ***INSCRIBED and dated by the author / illustrator Moyr Smith to the front free endpaper in sepia fountain pen ink: 'To Mrs Percy Taylor with Moyr Smith's kind regards 1897.' (Possibly to a prospective customer) **A book of fourteen etchings by Moyr Smith, including frontispiece and title-page with original tissue-guard between. All fourteen etchings present. Each of the etchings are square, inset, and the appropriate size for tile designs: 9 x 8 cm. The etchings are the illustrations by Moyr Smith designed to be used for a set of twelve illustrated tiles (excluding title-page and frontispiece). Possibly Mrs Percy Taylor was a prospective customer for this set of humorous British Courtship tiles, that may not have been produced. ***Very good in buff buckram covered boards with gilt titles to spine and front board. Corners slightly bumped. Boards browned. Spine darkened. Very small green surface mark to front board. Very sporadic light foxing to rear pastedown. Interior pages and etchings clean. ***Twelve numbered original etchings plus frontispiece and title-page. Contents: Frontispiece: Idealization; Title-page: Maiden Meditation; Plate I. Admiration, Early British Period; II. Trepidation, Roman; III. Conversation, Anglo-Saxon; IV. Declaration, Norman; V. Osculation, Plantagenet; VI. Tergiversation, Tudor; VII. Retaliation, Elizabethan; VIII. Recrimination, Carolian; IX. Botheration, Queen Anne; X. Reconciliation, Georgian; XI. Annexation, Regency; XII. Unification, Victorian. Printed dedication states: 'To the most accomplished of Flirts, these Sketches are dedicated by an admiring Student of her pretty little ways.' ***16 pages. 236 mm x 158 mm. ***John Moyr Smith (Mar 1839 - Dec 1912) was born in Glasgow. He was a British artist and designer, known particularly for his work on ceramic tiles. John Moyr Smith was a major but little-researched figure in the design reform movement whose work ranged from ironwork, furniture, pottery, wallpaper and lace curtains to carpets. The large number of designs he made for Messrs Minton included drawing on the metal plates for the following series of tiles: Shakespeare, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, Waverley, Thomson's Seasons, Old Testament, New Testament, Fairy Tales, The Trades, The Months, Anacreon, English History, Music and Sciences. He designed and illustrated tiles, in the Arts & Crafts tradition, for Minton in the 1870s. Minton's was a major company in Staffordshire pottery, and was Europe's foremost ceramic factory during Victorian times. His series of tiles are known for their intricate scenes, often telling stories e. g. from Shakespeare's plays, the Bible, the Morte D'Arthur, the Arabian Nights and Aesop's Fables, and include a Nursery Rhymes series e. g. 'Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall'; Shakespeare Series: such as Twelfth Night; and the Idylls of the King Series. John Moyr Smith's tiles are now becoming very much collected, with individual rare tiles fetching high prices. ***This particular book of etchings, showing 'British Courtship' through the ages could have been intended to be used for a series of tiles to decorate the surround of a Victorian fireplaced. ***Only one copy of the first edition of 'British Courtship' by Moyr Smith' is recorded on COPAC, being held at The British Library. This first edition is particularly scarce, being dated and inscribed by Moyr Smith. These etchings may have been intended for but never used for tiles. ***Of interest to antiquarians and tile ceramist historians and collectors, and anyone who wants to acquire an original set of etchings to be used for designs on a original set of tiles for a unique fireplace in their home. Ultra scarce.***. Inscribed by Author(s).

His two most significant works, both published by Batsford, were "Modern Cabinet Work" (1909) which brought him to a wider audience and "Furniture for Small Houses" (1924) but as revealed by this archive, his work went much wider. Añadir al carritoThe collection is in very good condition, with a few staple and pin holes. Gray's letters are signed 'Milner Gray' and occasionally 'Milner'. All but the first two, which are on Society of Industrial Artists letterheads, are on Design Research Unit letterheads. An early letter (5 April 1949), to Kenneth Luckhurst, Secretary, Royal Society of Arts, apologises for and explains a 'difficulty' which has arisen 'over the fees we estimated for completing the necessary working drawings and supervising construction of the permanent display screens for the Society's headquarters'. The rest of the correspondence makes clear Gray's role as an active member of the Society.

Añadir al carritoThe fourteen items are laid down on three pages, on two leaves of grey paper, removed from an album, on the reverse of one leaf are two coloured coaching scenes by Randolph Caldecott, one featuring a highwayman. The overall condition is fair, with creasing and signs of age. The Autograph Letter Signed is from Crane to 'My dear Stanley Little'. 1p., landscape 8vo. With letterhead of Beaumont Lodge, Shepherd's Bush, featuring an illustration by Crane of a shepherd and sheep. 20 September 1892. He is sending a copy of his 'Claims of Decorative Art', and hopes that, 'as one who has thought & written much on art', he will 'accept it as a contribution from my side the question, or at least as "Friendship's Offering".' (As an imperialist, Little's politics were opposed to Crane's.) He asks him to 'look for us at No 13 Holland St. Kensington, when you are next in town'. In a postscript he states: 'The good wife is away in Essex with the two boys, but returns at the week's end.' On the same page are six items with decorations apparently by Crane: first, a label for 'The Pioneer', printed in sepia, with space for 'Number | Contents | Price', showing a knight climbing up dense foliage to a languid lady; second, a label or bookplate for the 'A E & C S | Handicraft | Design', with the name supported by two women in revolutionary caps, each flanked by a cherub; third, another example of the Beaumont Lodge letterhead ; fourth and fifth, two copies of a strange tiny design of an African hunter with spear before a setting sun, printed in negative on grey paper; sixth, a tiny monogram (perhaps 'L J S'?), made by a snake and printed in red. The next page carries a season ticket, with design by Crane of two workmen shaking hands, for the 1906 Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society at the Royal Academy, made out in manuscript to 'The West Sussex Gazette'. The third page carries six items: first, a printed handbill advertising 'The Leek Press Papers: No. I. | The Relation of Art to Education and Social Life by Walter Crane | Twenty-eight pages in wrapper.' With two vignettes, the first, of two country folk with ten geese; the second of a peacock. The reverse advertises a 'Catalogue of a Collection of Designs by Walter Crane A.R.W.S., with vignette of stork and lettering by Crane. Carries two close tears repaired with archival tape. Second, printed in red, an invitation card designed by Crane, to the Old House, 13 Holland St: 'Dame Walter Crane bids you welcome on New Year's Day [1912] in the evening at nine thirty'. Third, Crane's autograph signature, cut from the valediction to a letter: 'Every yours | Walter Crane'. Fourth, a handbill advertisement for 'The Fabian Society | Session, 1886-1887', with design by Crane of female forms representing Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The 'Executive' are named as Annie Besant, Hubert Bland, Edward R. Pease, Frank Podmore, G. Bernard Shaw, Sidney Webb and Charlotte M. Wilson'. Fifth, an invitation card, printed in brown, to the private view of the fifth Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society, 3 October 1896, at the New Gallery, 121 Regent Street. Made out to J. Stanley Little of the African Review. Featuring the same design as above of the two workers shaking hands. Sixth, letterhead, printed in red, for 13 Holland Street, Kensington, W. Featuring a design of a crane by Crane. Heavily creased. SEE IMAGES.

Number 3 of 75 copies SIGNED BY BRINGHURST (poet), HENRY (printer), KYLE (designer), and RICHARD MINSKY, The Center's founder and the project's coordinator. THIS COPY ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY BRINGHURST, "for Allen Mears,/ who may appreciate/ more than most not only/ the poetry but also/ Barbara's and Hedi's/ magnificent engineering." Four 4to volumes bound in heavy cardstock -- three with Bringhurst's polyphonic poetry meant to be read by 3 people at once; and the last with Bringhurst's afterword describing the evolution of both poem and project, the subscribers list (Mear's name is 3rd on the list), and the colophon leaf. HOUSED IN ORIGINAL BOX WHICH WAS AVAILABLE TO BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY. Box measures approximately 17.25 x 17.25 x 4" and holds the elaborately constructed fold-out lecterns -- one for each book. As Bringhurst characterized the overall structure, this is "a wonderfully complex piece of biblio-engineering made to behave as if it were simple." TOGETHER WITH the original prospectus, various pre-publication announcements, and extensive correspondence (in the form of printed emails and typed, signed letters) between collector Allen Mears, Bringhurst and The Center, INCLUDING A SIX-PAGE TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY BRINGHURST discussing the genesis of the project, his hopes for it, a 2004 performance of the poem, etc., with a copy of his 2-page design notes with drawings "submitted to Hedi Kyle and Richard Minsky a couple of years ago." Altogether fine. Signed.
