Trade Paperback. Condición: Fine. Third Printing. 448 Pages Indexed. No defects noted to this feel of new book with flawless interior text pages. Personal Reflections of Hawaii's World War II Nisei Soldiers. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, set Hawaii on a new course of history that would affect every living soul in these Islands. How Hawaii's people, particularly those of Japanese ancestry, responded to the act of aggression by Japan changed Hawaii's social, economic, and political history forever. Much has been written about how Americans of Japanese ancestry in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service, and the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion answered their country's call through military service - -and the high price they paid in human lives in freedom's cause. The history has been recorded, the battles documented, the medals tallied, the social and political legacy articulated and applauded. Not as thoroughly recorded, however, are the thoughts and innermost feelings of the Nisei soldiers who put their lives on the line for their country, and what those experiences meant to them. Those stories have always been the most difficult to pry from the hearts and souls of the AJA men who served our country in World War II. It was that void in the story of Hawaii's Nisei soldiers that Bishop Ryokan Ara of the Tendai Educational Foundation asked members of the Hawaii Nikkei History Editorial Board to fill. This book is the result of that effort. It is a rare and powerful collection of personal thoughts written by the soldiers themselves, reflections of the men's thoughts as recorded in diaries and letters sent home to family members and friends, and other expressions about an episode that marked a turning point in the lives of many. Lisowski, Nina - Book Design (ilustrador).…

Includes Author Dedication; List of Maps and Illustrations; Ranks of the Kriegsmarine; Prologue; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; Notes and Index. Illustrated with preliminary page maps and illustrations, a section of black-and-white photographic plates and map illustrated front and rear endpapers. "The Tirpitz Must Be Destroyed. This is the gripping account of the epic hunt for Hitler's most terrifying battleship - the legendary Tirpitz -- and the brave men who risked their lives to attack and destroy this most potent symbol of the Nazis' fearsome war machine. The Tirpitz was the pride of Hitler's navy. To Churchill, she was "the beast", a menace to Britain's supply lines and a threat to the convoys sustaining Stalin's armies. The Tirpitz was said to be unsinkable, impregnable - no other target attracted so much attention. In total thirty-six major Allied operations were launched against her, including desperately risky missions by human torpedoes and midget submarines and near-suicidal bombing raids. Yet the Tirpitz remained afloat. It was not until November 1944 that she was finally destroyed by RAF Lancaster bombers flown by 617 Squadron - the Dambusters -- in a grueling mission that tested the very limits of human endurance. The man who led the raid - Willie Tait - was one of the most remarkable figures of the war, flying missions almost continuously right from the start. Until now his deeds have been virtually unknown. Using his distinctive narrative flair, exclusive cooperation from Tait's family, firsthand accounts, Patrick Bishop recounts the numerous valiant attempts that finally culminated in an extraordinary wartime achievement." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition brown boards, maroon cloth spine and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Foreword by David M. Emmons; Preface; Introduction; Acknowledgments; Notes and Suggested Readings; Index and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. "In The Forgotten Founders Stewart Udall enriches our understanding of the conquest of the West. His book is a valuable antidote to the Hollywoodization of the westward movement. And it is a stirring tribute to the plain men and women who worked together to build schools and churches and dams and irrigation canals, thereby laying the foundation for a democratic order." - Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. "In this important new book, former secretary of the interior Stewart Udall reminds us of a more realistic Old West than the violence-packed one that the popular media have continued to give us. Himself the son of Arizona pioneers, Udall has wrtten eloquently in behalf of the everyday pioneer settlers and their families who went west.and with hard work and small complaint did the difficult work of opening up the vast western country." - Alvin M. Josephy, Jr. "For half a century, Stewart Udall had been a leading innovator of land conservation in the West. With this great book, he asks us to shed the still-dominant myths of the Wild West that keep us from seeing these lands for what they are. He returns us to the deeper values of the region's communities that can guide us into honoring the uniqueness of the intermountain West and its culture." - Gary Nabhan. "For many people, the "Wild West" popularized in movies and pulp novels - a land of intrepid explorers and traders, warlike natives, greedy gold seekers, and trigger-happy gunslingers - has become the true history of the region. The story of the West's settlement is a singular chapter of history, but not, according to native westerner and former U.S. secretary of the interior Stewart Udall, for the reasons filmmakers and novelists would have us believe. In The Forgotten Founders, Udall draws on his extensive knowledge of and experience in the American West to make a compelling case that the key players in early western development were instead the many families who established communities there, often traveling great distances and enduring bitter hardships to do so. He offers a fascinating and wide-ranging view of western history and those who have written about it, challenging conventional wisdom on subjects ranging from Indian societies and Manifest Destiny to the importance of eastern capital and religion's role in westward settlement. Udall argues that the overblown attention given to a Wild West that was "won" distorts our sense of the past and undermines our sense of the present. It glosses over the values and accomplishments of the men and women of the pre-railroad age who came, camped, settled, and stayed. Native peoples, Franciscan friars, Mormon, Protestant, and Catholic pioneers - these and others like them were, in Udall's view, the true settlers, and their goals are as important today as they were centuries ago: "amity, not conquest; stability, not strife; conservation, not waste; restraint, not aggression." The Forgotten Founders offers a provocative look at an important era, rescuing the Old West and its pioneers from the margins of history where latter-day mythmakers have dumped them. For anyone interested in the authentic history of the American West, this is an important and exciting work." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Willson, Bridhid (jacket design); Denver Public Library Western History Collection (jacket photo) (ilustrador). …
