Offered is an essay entitled "The Real Racism" (Libertarian Alliance Political Notes No. 46 ) written by Dennis O'Keeffe and published in 1990 by the Libertarian Alliance out of London, England. A single sheet measuring 8-1/4" by 11-11/16" printed on both sides. Mr. O'Keeffe begins his articl…e by writing, "We have heard much talk in recent years in this country of 'racism.' Most of such talk has been vacuous or pernicious or both. The white British have been accused first of all of overt prejudice, a proposition rather at odds with the astonishing ease with which more than three million non-whites have been absorbed by the British nation, mostly in England, in the last three decades. The other attack accuses the British of a parallel malady known as 'institutionalized' racism. In order to make this different from the other kind, its detectors and critics have to argue what amounts, really, to the view that it is accidental, that white teachers 'inadvertently' cause black children to get bad examination results. We end up here with the nonsense of applying a morally pejorative term (racism) to alleged accidents.".

Despite the obvious suc…cess of the market economy in generating wealth, many commentators accept this success only grudgingly, and unthinkingly criticise the moral underpinnings of capitalist societies. "Economy and Virtue" takes such critics on and finds their criticisms wanting. It analyses how a free society both relies on and promotes values. Unless people can choose between good and evil in conditions of freedom, there is no morality in performing an action that helps another person. A market economy promotes cooperation and restrains selfishness because it relies on contracting by consenting parties, and because its legal system protects the property rights of the vulnerable, just as it does the property rights of the powerful.The authors argue that we cannot judge the market economy by observing the obvious process of 'getting and spending', because this process alone tells us nothing about the motives and character of those involved. There is much more to the market economy than material acquisition: the eminent authors in this volume discuss lucidly and convincingly the moral justifications of the market order.
