CONT…ENTS DESCRIPTION: The author served three years as chaplain of the 1st Rhode Island cavalry and the 3d Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. He also wrote "Sabres and Spurs, The First Regiment Rhode Island Cavalry in the Civil War (1876) and other works of poetry and history. The Battle of Cedar Mountain took place on August 9, 1862, during the Civil War. Confederate forces won the battle, allowing the reunification of the Army of Northern Virginia during the Northern Virginia Campaign, which helped ensure a Confederate victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run. CONTENT DESCRIPTION: The author wrote two well regarded books on Rhode Island regiments; the other being Shot and Shell (history of the 3rd R.I. heavy artillery). In each, the author uses numerous regimental papers, state archives, journals and diaries of officers and men, field reports and other special papers prepared by unit members to tell the regiment's experiences.
