C'est dans cette oeuvre que Prosper, défenseur autoproclamé de saint Augustin et de sa doctrine sur la grâce, a pu fournir la première critique, et la plus complète, des théories propagées à Marseille et dans le sud-est de la Gaule par les adversaires provençaux de l'évêque d'Hippone, en s'appuyant exclusivement sur des extraits tirés de la Conlatio XIII « Sur la protection de Dieu », publiée quelques années plus tôt.
