Cover title. This catalogue was prepared by Alfred V. DeCredico. [From Preface] The aim of the Oriental Rug Society of New England is educational. Our prime concern is to make the public aware of the importance of the oriental rug as an art object. Not all oriental rugs are works of art. A rug that embodies fine craftsmanship, beautifully articulated drawing, and rich color, rises above the thousands of mediocre examples from the looms of the East and can be considered a work of art. This exhibition is mounted to show examples of oriental rugs which qualify as works of textile art. It is not intended to act as a guide to the structure and history of the oriental rug, but rather as a record of some of the rugs extant in this area. A great part of the preservation of the oriental rug will be a simple search and record mission. The more examples which are found and recorded, the greater the chance of their survival. In no other craft does design rise to such a high level of development. It is this that the collector and the numerous rug clubs and societies, both in the United States and abroad, seek to make known through their efforts. Through lectures and exhibitions such as this one, The Oriental Rug Society of New England hopes to aid in increasing the available knowledge and appreciation of the oriental rug and of the people who are responsible for this gift to the arts of mankind.
