Jakob Jakobsen came to Shetland in 1893 to study the old Norn language of Shetland. He spent the rest of his life working on his Shetland material. The result was his great two-volume Dictionary of the Norn Language in Shetland, and a major work on Shetland place names. He also collected and published Faroese linguistic, onomastic, folklore, ethnographic and historical work. In 2006 scholars from the Faroes, Shetland and further afield came together in Shetland to discuss Jakobsen's work. This volume is the result. It is an assessment of his achievements in all the disciplines that he worked in.
