He thanks him for his 'kind note and opinion respecting my "Many Thoughts" [ anthology of 1857 ] of which nearly 267 - tons have been sold, an odd way of putting it you will say, but such is the fact.' He is working on a 'curious and suggestive book now on Aphoristic Wisdom'. He thinks he may 'gather something' from Girdlestone's 'Collection', which he undertakes will be 'most carefully and thankfully returned'. (This final anthology was never published, and the manuscript, in forty volumes, now resides in the British Library.) The postscript thanks Girdlestone for 'the Pamphlets', and comments on the Chinese as 'wretched people' who 'never required an importation for 4000 Years. Why, because they utilised their Manure and the !'.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. 2nd edition. between A.D. 325, & A.D. 361. Second edition (Literally reprin ted from the first edition.) -- x, 230 p.; 23 cm. (Blehl A2b) At foot of last page, Burntisland: printed at the Pitsligo Press. -- Fron the printer's preface, by G. H. Forbes: `When in the autumn of 1852 I established a press in connection with my mission here, the difficulty which met me at the outset was to find employment for it. One of the first that occurred to me was the present treatise, which I had read several years before, with the deepest interest, but which had become so rare that for a considerable time I had endeavoured in vain to procure a copy. Soon after the printing began, it was taken up by the publisher whose name is on the title-page.' W. Perry's `George Hay Forbes : a romance in scholarship', 1927, gave some of the correspondence from William Froude, to whom Newman had conveyed the copyright, to Forbes, and spoke of this second edition `which probably numbered only a few hundred copies and is now rare.' (p. 59) -- Newman had found out in 1852 `that a most curious piracy of my `Arians' is discovered. The people bind it shabbily, introduce it into sales, and it sells at from 40/ to 50/ In consequence I shall (I suppose) re-print it at once, with all its imperfections on its head.' (Letters and diaries XV, p. 226); `I have discovered an infamous piracy of it selling for the genuine edition; and I am forced, if possible, to reprint it--to hinder a fraud.' (p. 312): but none of the faked copies is known to have survived. -- Newman let stand from 1833 two passages on `a corruption of Christianity' (p. 7) and on `the Papal Apostasy' (p. 226) which in the third edition of 1871 he relegated to the end of the Appendix. Fair ex-lib., upper spine chipped off. Pages brittle, some loose.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. 1st edition. between A.D. 325, & A.D. 361. -- xi, 425 p.; 22 cm. -- Newman's first book, dedicated to John Keble. [Not from pirated edition] 'This self-restraint and abstinence, practised, at least partially, by the Primitive Church in the publication of the most sacred doctrines of our religion, are termed, in theological language, the disciplina arcani. .I believe, the most accurate consideration of the subject will lead us to acqu iesce in the statement, as a general truth, that the doctrines in question have never been learned merely from Scripture. Surely the sacred volume was never intended, and is not adapted to teach us our creed; however certain it is that we can prove our creed from it,when it has once been taught us, and in spite of individual produceable exceptions to the general rule. From the very first, that rule has been,as a matter of fact, for the Church to teach the truth, and then appeal to Scripture in vindication of its own teaching. And from the first, it has been the effort of heretics to neglect the information provided for them, and to attempt of themselves a work to which they are unable, the eliciting a systematic doctrine from the scattered notices of the truth which Scripture contains.' (p. 55 f.) -- 'The Word and the Sacraments are the characteristic of the elect people of God, but all men have had more or less the guidance of tradition. .This vague and unconnected family of religious truths, originally from God. .may be called the dispensation of Paganism' (p. 89) -- 'Already, in his first book, Newman tends to define the true and the false in terms of the real and the unreal. As we watch his thought developing, we shall see that truth and reality become almost synonymous' (Ker's biography, p. 49) -- (Blehl A2a) Rubbed and edgeworn half tan calf, spine lacking title-piece.

Lumley, 1871, pr. by Gilbert and Rivington], binding unsigned. The sole deluxe edition among Newman's works. -- Invited by Hugh James Rose in March 1831 to write on the councils of the church, Newman by August was planning three or more volumes: 'What light would be thrown on the Nicene Confession merely by explaining it article by article? to understand it, it must be prefaced by a sketch of the rise of the Arian heresy' which he completed on 31 July 1832 (Ker, biography, p. 42-46) -- Between 1834-39 Newman wanted to rewrite this work (in 1842-44 he issued an annotated translation of Select treatises of S. Athanasius.in controversy with the Arians) but in 1854 merely authorized a literal reprinting. -- He wrote to Dean Church in August 1870 'I am sending out a new edition of my 'Arians.' Did I touch its structure, it would come to pieces, so I am doing nothing but removing some of the imperfections of style, and adding (a very) few notes; with two or three long bits in an Appendix from other works of mine. Though I have done so little to it, it has taken me a good deal of time.' (Letters and Diaries 25, 183). Of this limited edition, B. M. Pickering informed Newman on 10 July 1873 that 'Mr Lumley sold all the octavo or large paper copies to one bookseller' who did not number them serially. (LD 26, 336n2) -- [The fourth edition of 1876 was reset with an addition to note V, then stereotyped for later impressions] Near fine full olive-brown morocco. All edges brightly gilt.
