He held close relations with the monarchy and was also befriended with Mirabeau and a central figure in the latter's secret agitation for the restoration of the monarchy. He was the executor of Mirabeau's last will and as such entrusted with his papers. La Marck however did not want to publish this correspondence during his life and entrusted it to the present editor Ad. de Bacourt. The first volume includes a long biographical sketch of La Marck and his relations to the court of Louis XVI. 'La Marck's major rule during the Revolution was to serve as the main intermediary in arranging for Mirabeau to become a secret agent of the court and for the transmission of information between them. In this capacity, he played a central part in Mirabeau's conspiracy to restore the power of the monarchy through the escape of the king to the eastern frontier where he would abolish the National Assembly and create a new national legislature' (Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution, ii, 539-541).
