[Full collataion available.] With an engraved title-page, integral to the text, and many wood-cut diagrams. Bound in contemporary paneled speckled calf (re-backed). On the spine, six raised bands. Author and title gilt to the second panel. Date gilt to the tail. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Manuscript notation of twelve lines in an early hand to the recto of the first rear binder's blank. Re-backed, with the fore-corners strengthened. End-papers renewed. A little soiling to the initials and to the end-matter; else an unusually fresh example. Good margins. [Marcus] Vitruvius [Pol(l)io] (the praenomen and cognomen are dubious; ca. 75-15 BC) was an engineer-architect -- a modern distinction -- whose great work, De architectura libri x (ten books about architecture), was lost to modernity until Poggio Bracciolini discovered a manuscript (now lost) in the library of the abbey at St. Gallen in Switzerland in 1416. Although the manuscript contained no images, the treatise provides the basis for a reconstruction of a visual language that had been lost, and fostered the built Renaissance. From 1511 De architectura was habitually richly illustrated -- although Leonardo da Vinci used his own imagination to create the "Vitruvian Man," back-engineered from Vitruvius' comparison of the proportions of temples to those of men in book three, also the source of the orders of architecture -- and so it is from that tradition that the present edition is drawn. Cicognara dubs this Elzevier edition "la più ricca di opuscoli vitruviani riprodotti con nitidezza d'impressione, e correzione nei testi." The "opuscoli" enhance the core text of Vitruvius to make a single-volume education in architecture. The most prominent of the additions is Sir Henry Wotton's (1568-1639) 1624 Elements of Architecture, here translated into Latin by the volume's editor, Johannes de Laet (1581-1649). De Laet, best known as a cartographer, edited various Classical works, including Pliny's vast Historia naturalis. Vitruvius' work is appealingly broad to the geographer, as the first book treats town planning and the ninth book treats the intellectual sources of architecture, viz. geometry, astronomy and chronology. The edition also contain's Guillaume Philandrier's treatise on weights and measures (pp. 240-252), Greek and Latin indices (Ii1r-Ll6r), Marcus Meibom's commentary (pp. 253-264), Nicholas Goldmann's charming work on the Ionic volute (pp. 265-272), Bernardino Baldi's glossary (pp. 21-144) and his work on "Scamilli impares" (unequal steps, pp. 2145-164), Leon Battista Alberti's De pictura (pp. 31-32), Pomponio Gaurico's De sculptura (pp. 333-46) and Louis de Montjosieu's commentary on the De sculptura (pp. 347-66), and an excerpt of Claude Saumaise's Exercitationes Plinianæ in Solinum (pp. 367-69), followed by a two-page index of those four final works. No owner has left a name on the volume, but we know it was read critically; the twelve-line manuscript to the recto of the first rear end-paper contains corrections to the text in four locations: pp. 71, 185, 85 and 17 (in that order, suggesting several campaigns of close reading).
