Benjamin Constant
Nicolson, Harold [Sir Harold George Nicolson KCVO CMG (21 November 1886 - 1 May 1968) was a British diplomat, author, diarist and politician. He was the husband of writer Vita Sackville-West]. Henri-Benjamin Constant de Rebecque (25 October 1767 - 8 December 1830), or simply Benjamin Constant, was a Swiss-French political activist and writer on politics and religion. He was the author of a partly biographical psychological novel, Adolphe.

Inscribed by the translator on the flyleaf: 'Dr Counsell, With the Translator's kind regards, iii.iii. mcmxxv'. Constant's fictionalised account of his affair with Madame de Staël had first been translated into English by Alexander Walker shortly after its first appearance in French, in 1816. This is the first translation for more than a century. Rudler, who provides an enthusiastic Introduction, had recently been appointed the first Marshal Foch Professor of French Literature at Oxford.
