Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 3 parts in 2 vols., (ONLY FIRST VOLUME HERE) in small 4to., contemporary full vellum binding with gilt titling and ornamentation to spine, marbled edges, title page to each part printed in red and black, [2], 603, xxvi. Worm damage to binding, with no signs of damage to text block; the damage is limited to the spine, and thus the hinges are splitting and the spine is tender; vol. 1 lacks headband, stains, scuff marks and bumping to binding exterior, browning and very minor foxing to pages; otherwise a very good copy of great historical importance for the spread of religion in Asia. First edition. Pierre Parisot (1697-1769) was a French missionary, Capuchin monk, and priest. He took several names, including Pere Norbert, Cure Parisot, Norbert de Bar-le-Duc, Norbert de Lorraine, or Abbe Platel. He opposed Jesuits and wrote against them in this book, exposing the methods in which they were obtaining conversions in Asia. Text in French. The work explains the priority of the Capuchin mission in the area, the subsequent arrival of the Jesuits and gives an unending litany of complaints against the invaders. These include charges that the Society of Jesus was illegal, that the Jesuits infringed on Capuchin territory and jurisdiction, and that they lied about the number of their converts. Many letters and legal documents relevant to both the missions story are transcribed. The work appeared two years prior to the author's better known Mémoires historiques sur les missions des Indes. His books enjoyed a success of scandal throughout Europe, particularly among anticlerical Enlightenment readers, who naturally relished the unseemly divisiveness between the two great religious orders. Pierre PARISOT (born in Bar-le-Duc in 1697, dead close to Commercy in 1769), in religion the NORBERT father, was named Attorney General of the Foreign missions, and made a stay with Pondichery. The first text is a rare first edition of this scathing polemic against the Jesuits. The work explains the priority of the Capuchin mission in the area, the subsequent arrival of the Jesuits. Añadir al carritoSecond (or third?) edition of the funeral oration for the sinologist and mathematician Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737), by Father Norbert of Bar-le-Duc (1703-1769), dedicated to Pope Benedict XIV. The oration prooved highly important in the so-called "Struggle of the rites" in China between the Jesuit missionaries and the Chinese emperor and the Pope. The author of the oration, (Norbert de Bar-le-Duc, a Capuchin monk (1716) and priest (1729) also known as Norbert de Lorraine, Curé Pierre Parisot or Abbé Platel, was sent to Malabar and later to Pondicherry in December 1736 after being appointed procurator of the French mission. He stayed for three years in Pondicherry, where he soon came into conflict with the Jesuits on the same issue - "the struggle of the (now Malabaric) rites" -which had lead to Visdelou's exile in the same Capuchin monastery in the same town. I- Edition originale. Account of the quarrel of the Capuchins against the Jesuits who want to replace them in Pondicherry. The Capuchins have been installed since 1671 and the Jesuits do not respect the decrees of the Holy Congregation. Pondicherry is an essential stopover for the Capuchins who go to Tibet and, moreover, they plan to establish a mission in the Nicobar Islands. Father Norbert became famous for his troubles with the Jesuits. His work is a defense of his order regarding the practice of pagan rites on the Malabar coast. The Jesuits tolerated these concessions to idolatry which they considered necessary, while Father Norbert was a supporter of the ban made by Cardinal Maillard de Tournon, sent as an apostolic visitor to India at the beginning of the 18th century. Numerous decrees and correspondence are reproduced. Text in French and Italian opposite. II-Single edition of this text, which is part of the long history of the Chinese "Querelle des rites": the Jesuit Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737) was sent in 1685 to China with Father Tachard. He was chosen in 1708 by Cardinal de Tournon to help him in his inspection task and named vicar apostolic in this capacity. It was then that he dissociated himself from the position of his colleagues on the controversy over the Chinese rites, going so far as to provide the cardinal with the translation of official Chinese texts going against the doctrine of the Company (the "rites "towards Confucius and the deceased are civil ceremonies without a religious character, and therefore remain compatible with the practice of Christianity). He accompanied Cardinal de Tournon to Macao during his exile decided by the Emperor, and was able to leave for India after his dea.…
