Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Top edge foxed, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, text clean, bright, and unmarked. 1989 Hard Cover. 221 pp.This 14-story collection of horseracing stories by British and American writers will provide pleasant reading for fans of the ``sport of kings.'' Represented here are such familiar names as Arthur Conan Doyle (``Silver Blaze,'' the story in which Sherlock Holmes makes his famous pronouncement about ``the curious incident of the dog in the night-time''), Edgar Wallace (``The Coop,'' in which the prolific mystery writer's series character, race track tout Educated Evans, turns a surprise profit) and Sherwood Anderson (``I'm a Fool,'' the first-person narrative of a young man trapped in his own deceit, entertaining despite its outdated racial attitudes). Francis, as might be expected, has a bit of crime at the heart of his ``Carrot for a Chestnut,'' a story of the fixing of a race with an O. Henryish twist. Welcome ( Grand National ) spins a tale of the unlikely racing triumph of an Oxford student over his untrustworthy best friend in ``A Glass of Port with the Proctor.'' The volume opens with Richard Findlay's ``The Dream,'' a nicely done tale of premonition and disaster, and closes with E. de Somerville and Martin Ross's ``The Bagman's Pony,'' an offbeat, amusing story of a race against the clock in Colonial India.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First US edition hardcover in light blue cloth covered boards with bumped spine ends, fairly sharp tips and light sunning/soil. Red stamp on both endpapers states: American Lending Library, Dallas, TX but there is no card pocket, no evidence of ever having had one, and all pages are present. Tight copy with light soil at head of 282 page block. Price-clipped, original dust wrapper is cut 1/4" shorter than the book and is glued to book by half the rear flap, but is complete and displays well in new mylar. The danger and excitement of horse racing comes alive between the pages of Colin Davy's novel. This is a character study of a successful jockey so faithfully drawn, that it matters not if you like horseracing, you'll love Shrimp Harris.

But a former owner, the rich and formidable Mrs. Grimskick, knowing of the indiscretion, forces Sim to make enquiries, only to find that the horse, "The Twister," has been switched. Unfortunately, "The Twister's" trainer is Sim's good friend Wency Nunn, and "The Twister" is to run in the International Stakes at Ascot, for which Wency wants to back him to win a fortune. The problem for Sim is how to prevent the redoubtable Mrs. Grimsdick from claiming the horse before the gamble takes place.

Gift quality First Edition in blue cloth covered boards showing sharp upper tips and bumped lower ones. No names, tears or soil in the 252pp text, only a bit of light foxing on the edge of the page block. Unclipped, original color illustrated dust jacket shows light color loss at periphery, small rubs at foot of spine, lightly soiled white background rear dj panel. Hinges fine, no smells. Very readable story of a steeplechase jockey's life. As a youngster "Rip" Applin had been spoiled by friends richer than himself. On coming down from Oxford he was happy to accept an ideal job looking after the estates, and more particularly the horses, of Ted Bonnamy, who had a score of hunters, a salmon reach on the Dee, a grouse moor and - a lovely young wife. It was a pleasant prelude to a more dramatic turn of fortune's wheel which was to bring Rip dazzling success as a steeplechase jockey and then to a disaster which for a time wrecked his life. His regeneration and subsequent change of fortune both on the Turf and in the hazards of love a related by a writer who is inimitable in recreating the authentic atmosphere of the racing world.
