Not often does one find such a thoroughbred book as this one, which was written to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Royal Society of Medicine. The esteem in which the society is held in British medicine is exemplified in the recognition given it by the sovereigns of Britain since the time of His Majesty King William IV who granted it a charter in 1834 and who thereby declared himself "and his successors if they shall think fit" the Patron of the Society. Each of the successors of William IV has thought fit to be its patron. On what must have been a highly impressive occasion on May 21, 1912, King George V and Queen Mary attended the opening ceremony of the new home of the society at no. 1 Wimpole Street. This book is written as an historical account of the Royal Society of Medicine in England, from the years 1805 to 1955.
