Gaines appears in the list of acknowledgements and I'm making an assumption that Gaines (seems to be an author & historian, himself) is the elderly gentleman pictured whittling on the frontis. This image is repeated on the back panel of the dj in a small vignette, while Gaines seems to also be shown in another vignette on the front panel of the dj as a postmaster.
