In den frühen 1970er Jahren studierte er am Twickenham Technical College. Gegen Ende seiner Ausbildung entdeckte er sein Interesse an der Radierkunst und schuf eine kleine Serie von Radierungen, die auf einem Jazzstück von Charlie Parker basierten. Nach Abschluss seiner Ausbildung übernahm er erste Aufträge für die Kochrubrik des *Daily Express*, war jedoch frustriert und desillusioniert angesichts der mangelnden kreativen Freiheit. Da es ihm an verständnisvoller Beratung fehlte, gab er das Zeichnen für etwa ein Jahr auf und arbeitete stattdessen als Briefträger.
