Leather is smooth, plain, and… unmarked to the front and rear covers, but the spine has five, bright gilt-bordered raised bands, with 4 of the 6 compartments comprising gilt floral decorations. The title is in the 2nd compartment in bright gilt on a deep burgundy-red leather label & the authors are also titled in gilt in the 4th compartment on a tan leather label. The top and bottom of the spine have plain gilt borders. Inside the inner dentelles are brightly decorated in gilt, and with marbled endpapers. All edges very bright gilt. The book is housed in a marbled paper covered slipcase, with a title label in cream, lettered in gilt, to the rear end, so you could display the book either way on the shelf and not expose the leather to light and fading. This is rarely done with slipcases now. There is the very slightest of rubbing to the corners of the slipcase, and one small patch of wear to the top of one side (c.1 cm x 1cm) where the pattern has rubbed off. But NO damage. All hinges tight, overall wear is negligible. Internally, apart from the author's signatures. There are NO inscriptions or marks. Subscribers list. Narrative by James Lees-Milne. 9 colour plates and numerous b/w photos and prints, double page Map, etc. 398pp on good quality shiny paper. A beautiful Near New copy . Marvellous as a gift or just to add to an existing collection or just to keep and admire. This book is large and overweight at nearly 3 kilos unpackaged, and may require extra postage for international customers only. Original green-gray linen 3-ring binder, manuscript title on front cover "Kienle personal copy" (minor edgewear…, some hole-punches at gutter margin w/ tears, age toning, occasional annotations), still a VG exemplar; 2nd -- 4to. 31 leaves (unnumbered), 27 on thick cardstock, 4 mylar sleeves, with 67 colour photographs (66 mounted, many composite panorama photos composed of several colour snapshots, 1 large panorama laid-in, when unfolded 21.25 x 4 in.), nearly all w/ detailed manuscript annotation captions, some w/ ink MS annotations added to the photos themselves. Contemporary red vinyl 3-ring binder, manuscript title in black Sharpie ink on front cover, from the library of Dr. Clive F. "Rick" Kienle (1942-2025), geologist, and specialist in aerial photo mapping . First edition of this very rare original safety analysis report, and geotechnical report of the WPPSS Nuclear Power Project No. 1, intending to establish the historic impact of the historic North Cascade earthquake whose epicenter for the believed 6.5 to 7.5 quake was Ribbon Ridge just past Entiat on the way to Lake Chelan. These in-depth reports focused on the necessary design elements required by the ever evolving Nuclear Regulatory Commission to ensure safe operating designs by studying where the faults in Central & Eastern Washington lie, as well as their historic impacts. Sections, and geological surveys focus on the stability of the slopes to the north and west of the proposed site at the Hanford Reservation, and estimated the effects of the earthquake resistant design on slope stability and plant safety. This additional borings, geologic mapping of the area, photo aerial surveys, additional identification of basalt outcrops by chemical, petrographic, and remnant magnetism analyses, lab studies, liquefaction analyses along with construction of a 3-D models of the site. The second volume includes the original and unique author's own photographic manuscript record supporting the work by Shannon & Wilson on the shifting ground, and faults of the Rattlesnake Hills Region, an anticline of the Yakima Fold Belt along several geological folds, and now site of a significant wine grape growing region in South-Central Washington State. Photos encompass aerial and ground level inspection and investigation of the Dry Creek Fault, Tiger Fault, Hite Fault Zone from ridge north of Tollgate Chalet, and other nearby fault zones in order to investigate further the subsequent impact of the 1872 Earthquake which had struck the Pacific Northwest to establish geological stability, and enhanced structures for WPPSS 1. WPPS No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant was a planned 1250 Megawatt nuclear power plant on the Hanford Site which along with its' companion plant WNP-4 (twin unit) were part of a five-plant construction project which although partially completed was never commissioned, and whose cancellation led to the largest municipal bond default in US History. Shannon & Wilson, together with Rick Kienle's firm were integral parts of teams working through the 1970's on geotechnical studies for several nuclear power plants that had been proposed and in the Pacific Northwest following up the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant constructed upon the site of the former Trojan Powder Co. plant site, as well as adjacent properties beginning in 1967. Prior to the efforts by PGE as a means to solve the exploding power usage demand in the fast-growing Portland, OR area in the Mid-20th-Century WPPSS had been organized in 1957 as a municipal corporation allowing publicly owned utilities to combine resources to build Nuclear Power Plants, however inflation, design changes, safety concerns by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission caused massive delays and increased costs, and one case a structure was rebuilt 17 different times because of incompetent contractors. After the default in 1982 on $ 2.25 billion in bonds, the court battle would stretch for over 15 years before settlements, but it did cost ratepayers 10's of 1000's of dollars per person. The artist, a Canadian painter, print maker and writer, ach…ieved early recognition at the Armory Show of 1913, where he had 5 paintings exhibited. The idea of using color in a drypoint, as in the print available here, was an original idea of Milne's, as the tradition practice was black and white only. Wikipedia: "He developed a method of making colour drypoints, printing one colour over another with different plates for each. Milne had first tried etching and drypoint while he was a student at the Art Students' League and his idea of colour drypoint was unprecedented, as the tradition was to only use black and the white of the paper. He had thought of creating colour drypoints years before, but lacked the equipment to carry through his experiments, as the printmaking technique requires metal plates which are scratched or etched into, then inked, wiped and finally run through a printing press. It took many months for Milne to achieve the sparsely layered look that he envisioned with his prints, but the results were very compelling."Condition of this book:Fine, tears in the parchment wrapper. Milne, David B. (Canadian, 1882-1953). HILLTOP or PAINTING PLACE. Drypoint in two colors, 1931. Published in, and extracted from, the Colophon, Part V, March, 1931. Edition of about 3000, printed by the artist on wove paper and signed in pencil. Two plates were used for the colors. Because of the size of the edition, Milne had t…o rework the plates, so that there are ten states, each approximating 300 prints. 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches (plate), 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (). The left margin is narrower (1/2 inch) than right (1 inch), and a bit rough, as a result of the removal from the periodical, else in excellent condition. Despite the large size of the edition, the print is not at all common in the market. Milne was born in Canada. In 1903 he moved to New York and studied at the Art Student's League for three years. Five of his paintings were exhibited at the famed Armory Show, and his work was included in the Panama Pacific Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915. Although his work was represented in NY by the Montross Gallery, where the work of the Ashcan School was also shown, he left New York and moved back to Canada. Although he had difficulty establishing himself as an artist in Canada, he ultimately found success with a sale of six paintings to National Gallery of Canada. In later years his work was purchased by Vincent Massey, the Governor General of Canada, and his wife Alice, who were collectors.
