The Macmillan Company, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1941. 1941 printing of the First (1st) American Edition, which was first published in America in 1936, following the 1924 publication in the U. K. . Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, off-white, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind. The Binding is full blue cloth, color uniform throughout, with the title and author in bright gilt to the front board, title, etc., in faded gilt to the spine, unmarked off-white endpapers (1/2" x 1" triangle cut from top corner of the front free endpaper), and corners square but showing signs of wear at the very tips. See photos. xi, 176 pages. 6 3/4" x 10 1/4". This book consisted of 42 chapters by Sidney Dark and 42 drawings by Joseph Pennell. As Dark states in the Introduction, "There are libraries of London books, but this is the one London book illustrated by Mr. Pennell. That is its reason and its justification. I have been much in the position of the dramatist hired to write a play around a poster, but, with a proper modesty, I have realised that the poster is too much for me. There is indeed no connection between the illustration and the letterpress except that they deal with the same scenes."
