The author is known only under the name "Man of the Teaching of Names" (C: ????, P: M?ngji?o Zh?ngr?n, W: Ming-chiao Chung-jen). The identity of the author and exact date of publishing are not known.[2] According to Philippe Postel, author of "Les traductions fran?aises du Haoqiu zhuan," the most commonly stated date of authorship is 1683, at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. After 1712 the story was given the subtitle Xiayi fengyue zhuan (T: ?????, S: ?????, P: Xi?y? f?ngyu? zhu?n, W: Hsia-i Feng-y?eh chuan, "A Tale of Chivalry and Love"). Chlo? F. Starr, author of Red-Light Novels of the Late Qing, wrote that this novel was among the best-known caizi jiaren novels. Maram Epstein, author of Competing Discourses: Orthodoxy, Authenticity, and Engendered Meanings in Late Imperial Chinese Fiction, described the novel as being "moralistic". The story has eighteen chapters. The beauty, Shui Bingxin, and the scholar, Tie Zhongyu, want to avenge their fathers and go against the bureaucracy, which is corrupt. Shui Bingxin's uncle wants her to marry a son of an official with a lot of power, but Shui Bingxin does not want to marry that man, who is dissolute. Tie Zhongyu rescues Shui Bingxin and the two begin to live in the same house. The uncle spreads rumors that suggest Shui Bingxin is not a virgin. Tie Zhongyu focuses on his studies after Shui Bingxin persuades him to. The two lovers marry after Tie Zhongyu receives the top ranking of the metropolitan examination. Due to the rumors, Shui Bingxin does not want to have sexual intercourse with Tie Zhongyu. At the end, the Empress oversees a physical examination of Shui Bingxin. In this way, the Empress verifies the virginity of Shui Bingxin.[9] The Emperor of China gives rewards to those loyal to him and punishes those guilty of crimes. Il y a ainsi 3 signatures (monogrammes) répétées en marge du recto de plusieurs dizaines de feuillets. A la dernière page, il a été ajouté « le plus grand » et au feuillet blanc suivant, en plus des trois signatures, se trouve la mention « signé mercier ». Ces trois signataires sont probablement les trois docteurs : Nicolas Mazure, Pierre Barbereau et Louis Fremont. Une note, en partie déchirée, indique que l'ouvrage a été publié chez Hélie Josset [Paris, 1665], et que le recueil est du père Charles, prêtre de l'Oratoire. Cet ouvrage, publié grâce au père Pasquier Quesnel, eut un certain succès, trois éditions, et fut utilisé jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Les sujets abordés sont l'excellence du clergé, les empêchements à la cléricature, l'habit, les actions des clercs, leur maison, du chant et de la façon de chanter à l'Eglise, que les clercs doivent être arrachés à une église, etc. Charles Guillard d'Arcy (1611-1659) était un oratorien, né à Lambesc en 1611. Fils d'un protestant, il revient au catholicisme et rentre chez les oratoriens en 1632, il sera rapidement prêtre (en 1635) et devint professeur de philosophie. Il sera notamment le professeur de Jean de La Fontaine. Cet augustinien fervent était aussi un ami de Toussaint Desmares. Ces deux oratoriens étaient des amis de Port-Royal. En 1644, il publie Sanctus Augustinus per seipsum docens catholicos et vincens Pelagianos, ouvrage dont Antoine Arnauld tirera partie. Il meurt à seulement 48 ans lors d'une mission à Dreux. Le manuscrit dont nous disposons porte un titre légèrement différent : Recueil de quelques passages des Sts Pères et de quelques synodes et conciles principalement de ceux de France touchant l'estat et les moeurs du Clergé. On notera que Nicolas Mazure est un ami de Port-Royal et qu'il accordera son approbation au traité d'Arnauld, De la fréquente communion (1643). Pierre Barbereau prendra la défense d'Arnauld en 1655. Provenances : P Legendre (prêtre ?) avec sa signature en tête du feuillet de note au début ; Marie-Hortense Malavielle (1844-1930), avec son nom répété sur le contreplat (en partie gratté) et face au titre, jeune fille de Lozère.
