Free endpapers and half-title page removed. Title page detached but present. Text Block firm. No inscriptions. Occasional spots of foxing, mostly in fore margins.

Has the word "Scarce" written on fep. 486 pages, incl. index, + coloured fold-out map at fnt before title page, preface & addenda, and map index. Book tight & clean.

Two engravings frontis plus twenty exceptionally handsome engrvings in text of scenes and animals in India after William Daniell. . The Oriental Annual is the second of a planned three volume set containing descriptions of the three English Presidencies in India. The first covered Madras, this volume describes Calcutta. Ultimately seven volumes by the author with illustrations by Daniell were published. Dedicated to the then-Princess Victoria and her mother, the Duches of Kent. Text is clean, tight and undamaged, no foxing Front hinge cracked but holding. Oriiginal blind -stamped with a pattern of coiled snakes surrounding a gold-stamped imaged of three men riding an elephant, Gold stmped title with palm tree and camel on spine. Pigskin leather boards in VG condition with slight loss along edges. Gilt edged pages. Previous owner's name in pencil plus binders' stamp on front end-papers. Presumed First. Stamped Leather. The first edition. In the publisher's original full embossed morocco binding with gilt detail. Bound by F. Westley. With a beautiful frontispiece, an engraved title page and twenty full page plates by William Daniell. Collated complete. Daniell was an English landscape painter, best known for his work in aquatint. During his artistic career, he travelled extensively around India, painting the people and scenery. A fascinating work regarding the culture of India. Written from the personal accounts of Rev. John Hobart Caunter. Caunter was an English cleric and writer who served as a cadet for the East India Company. He published numerous works relating to India and Biblical studies. 'The Oriental Annual' series concerned the different areas of India and was published in seven volumes. With an advertisement for the work to the front of the book, alongside four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front free endpaper. In the original full morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the upper rear joint. Light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is loosening. Light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Binders label to the front paste-down. Previous owner's ink signature to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained between the frontispiece and engraved title page, but still firm. Pages age-toned to the edges. Spotting to the plates. The odd spot and handling mark throughout however the text is still bright and clear. Good. book.

Publisher's embossed cloth, spines and covers blind-stamped and richly decorated in gilt, a.e.g., expertly rebacked.Deals with a journey visiting Madras, Tanjore, Madurai, Trichengur, Seringapatam, kingdom of Coorg Rajah, Cochin, Angria Bank, Muscat in Oman and finally Bombay and its vicinity. The beautiful plates depict views, sacred and famous buildings and sites, exotic animals including wild beasts fights and tiger hunt, etc. William Daniell travelled in India with his uncle Thomas Daniell for eight years and they produced a number of highly desirable aquatint illustrated works of the country including the renowned "Oriental Scenery" (1794). This volume is included in a series of seven volumes issued between 1834 and 1840.
