Biology -- Epilogue. - Of the early investigators of nature whose work is known, Anaxagoras was the first scientist in the sense in which we use the term today. At the root of his system lay careful observation of nature, and where simple observation failed, he sought to devise experiments in order to test his hypotheses and make his conclusions accessible to the public. Most of the elements of what we call scientific method can be found in the work of this man whom later generations rightly acclaimed to be the first to speak like a sober man after the stammerers who preceded him. Anaxagoras and the Birth of Scientific Method is a study of the theories and methods of one of the greatest minds in the history of science. It presents his ideas as they fit into a unified theory of natural phenomenaa theory characterized by elegance, beauty, and simplicity as well as by unusual incisiveness. Throughout the book, Anaxagoras work is looked at from the point of view of a scientist surveying the achievements of a distinguished colleague of a past age who was concerned with questions very much alive today.
