This pharmacological dissertation on narcotics by Johan Wilhelm Dalman (1787-1828) was the second treatise defended by the author under the presidency of the linnean disciple Carl Peter Thunberg. The first one, published in 1807, was a study of the Museum of Natural History in Uppsala. Dalman is primarily known as an entomologist and was librarian at the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and responsible for its zoological museum from 1818. In 1819, he also became botanices demonstrator at Karolinska institutet.
