President Daggett's Sermon is from Galatians IV. 19, a discussion of the Apostle Paul, who "had been the principal instrument in spreading and planting the Christian Religion in Galatia, and the adjacent parts of Asia M…inor." Paul's "excellent and animated epistle to the Galatians" responded to "false teachers, who meanly endeavoured to sink his character, and destroy his influence with these converts to Christianity." The Charge to Reverend Baldwin is given by Reverend Elijah Sill of New-Fairfield; and the Right Hand of Fellowship by Reverend Joseph Peck, also of New-Fairfield. Evans 11621. Trumbull 538. Stitching perished leaving most signatures loose but present, brief staining to bottom spine-edge corner, else Good to Very Good, internally clean and sound.…Detailed lecture on the requirements of the minister in speaking intelligibly to his congregation, for example "By using great care in defining and explaining out words, where there is any danger of a misunderstanding" (p. 13). Daggett also warns against "speaking in an unknown tongue, or in ambiguous, doubtful terms," as it is a "gross affront to common sense, and a manifest imposition upon those whom we pretend to teach" (p. 21). This copy without "An Appendix, by Another Hand. An Account of the Life, Character, and Death of Mrs. Mary Clap ." Printed by Benjamin Mecom, son of Benjamin Franklin's favorite sister, Jane. Mecom (1732-1766) had been apprentice to Franklin's partner James Parker in New York. His uncle set him up as a printer in Antigua, a venture in which Mecom failed. Mecom returned to America, where he unsuccessfully had presses in Boston, New York, and New Haven.
