Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 8vo (24 cm), [4] pp., 49 ff. of facsimile. Saddle-stitched pamphlet in plain grey-green dust jacket (dust jacket slightly rubbed and creased). Limited edition of 300 copies. A manuscript inscription on the Note leaf from the British typographer and book designer John Ryder to Dr G. W. Ovink, the distinguished Dutch typographer and historian of lettering, asking him to compare the facsimile with any other surviving copy of the 1535 edition. The first modern facsimile of one of the rarest and least accessible Italian writing books of the Renaissance. Ugo da Carpi's Thesauro de Scrittori, first published at Parma in 1535, occupies a distinctive place in the history of calligraphy, combining a practical manual for professional scribes with an encyclopaedic survey of contemporary and historical scripts. Although Ugo is chiefly remembered as the inventor--or earliest practitioner--of the chiaroscuro woodcut, the Thesauro demonstrates the breadth of his interests in the graphic arts and the close relationship between writing, design, engraving, and printing in sixteenth-century Italy. Reproduced complete in facsimile, the work presents models of an exceptionally wide range of hands, including Cancellaresca, Mercantesca, Formata, Corsiva, Antiqua, Moderna, and Bastarda, together with specimens of Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, and Arabic scripts, reflecting the Renaissance fascination with both classical learning and the languages of the Eastern Mediterranean. Unlike many contemporary writing manuals, the Thesauro also functions as a practical craftsman's handbook, providing detailed instruction on cutting and shaping pens for different scripts, preparing inks and varnishes, selecting paper, and other aspects of the scribe's workshop. Throughout, writing is treated as both a disciplined art founded on geometric proportion and a practical craft requiring technical mastery. An interesting association copy, links two of the twentieth century's leading authorities on typography and lettering, adding particular interest for collectors of the history of writing, calligraphy, and graphic design.…
