Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Lloyd's of London: A Study in Individualism by D. E. W. Gibb (London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd.; New York: St. Martin's Press, 1957) is a detailed historical and institutional study of one of the world's most influential insurance markets. Written by a longtime insider and member of Lloyd's, the work traces the organization's evolution from its origins in Edward Lloyd's 17th-century coffee house to its emergence as a global center for marine and non-marine underwriting. Gibb emphasizes the uniquely decentralized, individualistic structure of Lloyd's, highlighting how private underwriting and collective risk-sharing shaped its development across centuries of commercial expansion and geopolitical change. The book combines narrative history with institutional analysis, covering key developments such as eighteenth-century underwriting practices, the formation of Lloyd's governing structure, expansion into fire and accident insurance, and the market's adaptation through major events including the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars. Illustrated with photographic plates and architectural drawings - including views of the Lime Street building and notable figures in Lloyd's history - the volume balances scholarly detail with accessibility, making it valuable both as a reference work and as a readable account of British financial history. This 1957 edition, published by Macmillan in London with St. Martin's Press distribution in New York, is First Edition, no subsequent printings indicated. The book is in Near Fine condition: clean blue cloth boards with bright gilt spine lettering, firm binding, and fresh, unmarked interior pages. The dust jacket is Very Good, price unclipped ($5.00), showing moderate toning to the white panels, light surface soiling, and edge wear with small chips and short tears at spine ends. A highly presentable copy of an increasingly sought-after mid-century financial history. D. E. W. Gibb was a longtime participant in the Lloyd's market, with decades of experience in underwriting and governance, including service on Lloyd's Committee. His insider perspective lends authority and depth to this work, offering both a historical account and an informed interpretation of Lloyd's institutional culture and its enduring global significance.…
