Añadir al carritoUnbound Pages. Condición: Very Good. Fourth Edition. A sensational case of seduction, family rupture, and social disgrace. Lord Grey and the Charnocks stand accused of corrupting Lady Henrietta Berkeley and encouraging her to defy her family. The proceedings reveal a world of clandestine meetings, divided loyalties, and the mora…l anxieties of Restoration society, all played out before the Kings Bench. 14 PAGES, printed in double columns. A genuine 1776 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. This particular trial report has been preserved in a modern card cover, prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 30 x 47 cms. Category: State Trials; Printed before 1800; State Trials::Large Folio. This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. Añadir al carritoBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condición: Very Good. In 1682, Nathaniel Thompson, William Pain, and John Farwell, printers and publishers associated with The Loyal Protestant Intelligence were tried at the Guildhall of London for libel, accused of disseminating letters and articles asserting that Sir Edmundbury Godfrey had died by sui…cide rather than murder. Godfrey's mysterious death in 1678 had been a catalyst for the Popish Plot hysteria, widely believed to be the work of Catholic conspirators. By challenging this narrative, Thompson and his associates were seen as undermining the legitimacy of the Plot and casting doubt on the Protestant cause. The prosecution focused on their role in printing and circulating politically charged material that contradicted the official account and inflamed public tensions. The trial reflects the fraught intersection of journalism, propaganda, and state power in Restoration England, where the printed word could be as dangerous as any weapon. 20 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Añadir al carrito. 6 volumes in 3. 12mo. LIV,55-204,[II],312; [II],208,[II],286; [XIV],294,[XVIII],246p. With an engraved plate, 2 folding tables printed on both sides and a seal of the Banque Royale'. Contemp. calf, gilt backs with double labels, marbled sides and endpapers. Fine set. First (only) edition. An account of the financial operations… of John Law and his Compagnie des Indes', including a great number of relative memoirs, letters patent, decrees, declarations, etc. Marmont du Hautchamp had been an admirer of John Law's system and his book is not written without partiality but has yet been recognized as the best contemporary history of the system and its most precious source. John Law's operations began with the foundation in 1716 of the Banque Generale', soon afterwards renamed Banque Royale'. This was followed by the scheme of colonization known as Mississippi scheme' in the Compagnie des Indes' which, by absorbing various other chartered companies, acquired the monopoly on the trade to America, Africa and China. Moreover, the company obtained the monopoly of tobacco, the control of the mint, the payment of the national debt, and the farm of the taxes. Within a few years Law's companies thus got almost complete control over France's overseas trade, its currency and public finances. In 1719 the Compagnie des Indes' and the Banque Royale' were united, and the promising outlooks of the new company lead to an unprecedented speculation in its shares. As known the bubble burst in 1720, cash payments were suspended and Law fled from the country, leaving behind ruined many of his former supporters. *Kress 4447. Einaudi 3728. Goldsmiths' 7712. Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, circa 1746 Folio (21 x 14 inches). Double-page engraved title-page with original hand-colour in full, 12 superb double-page…engraved maps by Dou, revised by Melchoir Bolstra, engraved by David Coster, which join to make one magnificent large wall-map, and one double-page engraved plate by Bolstra of sluice-gates near Katwijk, all with fine original hand-colour in full. Contemporary red roan backed marbled paper boards, paper label on the front cover with the short-title and date 1746 in manuscript (worn). Third edition, revised by Bolstra and previously published in 1647 and 1687-1688. This detailed series of maps was published by order of the Dike-reeve of Rijnland to document land reclamation in the area. The first 12 maps constitute the revision by Melchoir Bolstra of Dou's map of Rijnland, published in 1647 and 1687. The last map is Bolstra's "Afbeeldinge van Rhynlands waterstaat," or "Consept sluysen". In this, Dutch, context, "Rijnland" generally refers to the area around the Oude Rijn, the lower reaches of a minor branch of the Rhine river in the Netherlands. This river is referred to as "Rijn" (Rhine) in the Netherlands for historical reasons. This small, heavily-canalised and remote branch of the Rhine was, in fact, the river that the Romans used to call the Rhine and the northern limit of the Roman Empire in this area. The term "Rijnland" is itself ancient. Koeman writes: "Obviously South Holland has also had its big names in waterschapskartografie of the 17th century. Among those names dominates that of Jan Jansz. Dou, the surveyor of Rhineland and his colleague Steven Broeckhuysen. Their large map (.) is rightly regarded as the "non plus ultra" of Dutch water board mapping from the 17th century (.) the large scale [1: 30.000]. admitted the full view of the habitation: not just the outposts but all farms and other buildings along the roads. irreplaceable information about the infrastructure of the densely populated area of ??the Netherlands in the Golden Age" (Koeman, Geschiedenis van de kartografie van Nederland, p.138). The Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland is the oldest water board of the Netherlands, having received its first commission to protect the land from flooding back in 1248 from William II of Holland. For several centuries, the daily work of the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland was run by one Dike warden and seven hoogheemraden, of which two came from Haarlem and five from Leiden. Their responsibilities were traditionally to oversee the dam at Spaarndam and the dikes along the Zijl and the Does. The Hoogheemraadschap bought a meeting hall in 1578, that was also the permanent residence of the Dike warden. The facade was renovated twenty years later in 1598 to keep up with the new town hall. This Gemeenlandshuis is the first one used by the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland, but to meet with the Amsterdam Water Board and inspect the dikes along the Haarlemmertrekvaart and the sluices at Halfweg, the Gemeenlandshuis Zwanenburg was built by Pieter Post in 1645-1648. (see Waterschappen in Nederland: werken met water, een onberekenbare vriend, Koos Groen, Toon Schmeink, Bosch & Keuning, 1981).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. [1780-1781]. Sixteen volumes, pocket 18mo (133 x 74mm). Printed on fine laid paper. Uniformly bound in contemporary mottled French calf, ruled in gilt with olive morocco lettering labels, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. This beautiful miniature set was executed at the solitary expense of the Count d'Ar…tois (1757-1830), later Charles X of France, and numbered in full 64 volumes; the aim of which collected various sets of French works in verse and prose. Influential Enlightenment writers were thus compiled here, many of them French female authors, and limited to an overall printing of 100 copies by the famed printer Didot of Paris. Consisting: 1) DE LA FAYETTE, Madame (1634-1693). "Zayde." 1780. 3 vols., 156, 135, and 166pp. A classic novel with stories on the political, social, and cultural communities of early modern Spain. 2) DAUCORT, Claude Godard d'Aucour (1768-1826). "Le Berceau de la France." 1780. 2 vols., 175 and 152pp. Rare, first published in 1744 as a history of French civilization. 3) RICCOBONI, Marie-Jeanne (1714-1792). "Histoire du petit Jehan de Saint." 1780. 182pp. 8)TRESSAN, Comte de (1705-1783). "Histoire de Tristan de Léonois." 1781. 212pp.9) [DUCLOS, Charles Pinot (1704-1772)]]. "Confessions du comte de ***." 1781. 2 vols., 129 and 128pp. First published in 1742, a popular "portrait gallery" of the illustrious French. 10) TENCIN, Claudine Guérin de (1682-1749). "Le Siege de Calais." 1781. 2 vols., 122 and 126pp. First published anonymously in 1739. 11)ARNAUD, François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d' (1718-1805). "Sargines." 1781. 130pp. Good. Only light edgewear and some bumped corners, slightest spots, otherwise crisp and clean interior. The Count d'Artois, friend to Marie Antoinette and lover of the arts, sought to stimulate a renewal in fiction with the printing of this collection of novels in 35 titles. The overall collection of 64 volumes was printed from 1781 to 1784 and edited by the order of Louis XVI. Just two years later the French monarchy would be in crisis; bankrupt and facing various political upheavals in the years leading up to the Revolution. This surviving set dates from the time of relative peace before upheaval and before the Count later reigned as Charles X in the post-Revolution era in 1824. These survive as early relics of the French monarch's cultural interests and endeavors. François-Ambroise Didot printed no more than 100 copies as a whole impression; 60 with the arms of the prince and at least 40 were on common paper without the Count's heraldry, as in these, while others were produced on vellum (See Ebert 4938). These works are extremely neatly printed on laid paper and stand as a precursor to Didot's prolific typographic and printing career. Complete copies of the Count d'Artois's collection are of utmost rarity; these portative sixteen make up an excellent union. Brunet 19413. Añadir al carritoHardcover. 1st Edition. 16 double-page engraved maps (each sheet size ca 22 x 26 4/8 inches; ca 17 x 22 inches to the neat line and or plate-mark). A magnificent large uncoloured map of north Holland by Coenraedt Decker (1651-1685) and Abraham Deur (died 1717) after Dou, the title within a broad ruled banner across the top of th…e map, with the large and elaborate allegorical arms of the waterboard top centre, with three smaller arms either side of the commissioners, the imprint within another elaborate cartouche lower centre, the sea decorated with ships and compass rose (each map sheet with old central vertical fold and one of two small marginal tears with loss). First edition, re-issued many times over the next 50 years. The commissioners of the water corporation for this historical region of West Friesland, including the islands are shown as Aris vander Mieden (Chairman), Floris Wil, Gysbert Ramp, Gerrit Warmenhuysen, Gerard Fannus, and Johan Baert (also secretary). A decorative, detailed and proud map showing the islands, bays, hills, rivers, canals and towns and hamlets of West Friesland. The Dutch Water Boards are amongst the earliest forms of local government in the Netherlands, some of them dating back to the 13th-century when Friesland was divided as the dunes north of the Zuiderzee succumbed to the sea, and management of the fragile relationship between land and sea became increasingly important for the safety and livelihood of the Dutch people. These individual water corporations in turn influenced the development of a decentralized political system in the Netherlands dependent on communal cooperation, and so the rise of the Dutch Republic.
