Añadir al carritoHardcover. First Edition. First edition in Italian. Five books in one. xxxv, 362pp. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gold. Head-pieces and initials. Originally published in Latin in 1840, the text documented the Great Plague of Milan, which almost halved the population of the city and cost the lives of tens of thousands more people in Northern Italy. Alessandro Manzoni used this account to describe in detail the effects of the plague in his masterpiece, The Betrothed. Light wear to extremities, some scattered foxing throughout, old faint dampstain affecting the lower part of the text block. A very good copy. In the Italian language. Graesse VI.129.; Quarto.

ITALIAN FEMALE ADVENTURER IN OTTOMAN EGYPT, WHICH FOCUS ON THE DESCRIPTION OF THE CONDITION OF MIDDLE-EASTERN WOMEN AND THEIR LIFE IN HAREMS. OCLC LISTS ONLY 1 COPY IN NORTH AMERICA (NYPL). [WOMEN WRITERS; WOMEN TRAVELLERS; MIDDLE EAST; ANCIENT EGYPT] NIZZOLI, Amalia, and Francesco CUSANI. Memorie sull'Egitto e specialmente sui costumi delle donne orientali e gli Harem scritte durante il suo soggiorno in quel paese (1819-1828). Milan, Tipografia e libreria Pirotta & C., 1841. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 12mo. xvii [1], 393 [1] and [4] pp. of index. Small woodcut on t-p and tailpiece at colophon. Bound in early 20th-c. decorated-paper covered pasteboard, bookbinder's paper label to the upper pastedown (A. Tansini / Legatoria / di libri / Milano / Via Spartaco 19), red upper fore-edge; Internally good, with just some foxing to the initial and the final leaves due to the poor quality of the paper employed at the time. H.-t. restored at gutter, to the verso, and final leaf with reinforced outer margin, to the verso. Very scarce. "Amalia Nizzoli's work was not primarily to discuss the relationship between Christianity and Islam, though it does include relevant material and some critical remarks. She was among the first women to describe a journey to the Nile valley (together with Sarah Belzoni and Wolfradine von Minutoli). She was also one of the few 19th-century Italian women to travel to the East and write about it. Among her goals was to debunk lies about the harem and the public baths that were widespread among Western travellers. In this way, she joined a tradition started by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the 18th-century and followed by many male and female writers in the 19th century, including Gerard de Nerval." (David Thomas and John A. Chesworth (ed.). Christian-Muslim Relations. A Bibliographical History Volume 21. South-western Europe (1800-1914), p. 634) "Amalia Sola Nizzoli is known today for her memoirs: Memorie sull'Egitto; e specialmente sui costumi delle donne orientali e gli harem, scritte durante il suo soggiorno in quel paese (1819-1828), [Memories of Egypt; and Particularly Regarding the Customs of Oriental Women and Harems, Written during the Author's Stay in that Country (1819-1828)], one of the few instances of nineteenth-century travel writing by a woman in Italian in the years preceding the Risorgimento. Chronicling approximately a decade spent in Egypt as the wife of a diplomat, her memoirs, which are her sole published work, vividly describe her experience abroad. However, Nizzoli interests contemporary scholars principally for her memoirs' response to the works of her male European peers about their travels to the Orient. Rendering her perspective noteworthy are her gender and the complications of her position: an Italian-speaking Austrian subject, Tuscan and Piedmontese by birth, her homeland, the "Bel Paese"--not yet Italy--was a destination of other Europeans in the Grand Tour, much like the Orient itself. Rather than being a tourist, Amalia Sola Nizzoli belongs to a significant category of women whose voyages and foreign residency were the result of family relocation or husbands' careers. Due to her husband's antiquarianism, she also participated to a limited extent in the nascent field of Egyptology. [.] If travel writing as a genre has historically lacked a central place in the Italian literary canon due to the unstable definition of Italy and "italianità," or "Italian-ness," the home from which the traveller ventures forth, the theme of travel itself, as well as the related themes of exile and pilgrimage, has played a significant role, with travel often connoted as secular and commercial, exile and pilgrimage as political and religious." (Passage from: Gabrielle Elissa POPOFF, Columbia University, 2009, in University of Chicago's ITALIAN WOMAN WRITERS).
