Añadir al carritoCloth, small 8vo, 18 cm, vi, [4], 141, [1] pp, plates. From the blurb: "The new edition of this manual has been extensively revised in the light of new facts and knowledge. The pages on modern book production have been brought up to date, and the first chapter, dealing with the origins of printing in Europe, a subject on which new light has recently been shed, has been entirely recast. There are minor alterations elsewhere and some new plates. Based upon the original work by Harry G. Aldis, this manual is for all who are interested in printing, amateurs or professionals, and is the only one to cover the subject. Its chapters deal with the history of printed books from the beginning, with production methods and processes, illustrations, binding and the care of books. There are many illustrations, an original appendix on the development of type design, and a useful guide to further reading." Contents: I The Advent of Printing ; II The Spread of the Art; III The Fifteenth-Century Book ; IV The Scholar-Printers of the Sixteenth Century; V English Books, 1500-1800; VI The Modern Book; VII The Construction of a Book; VIII Illustrations; IX Bookbinding; X The Handling and Mishandling of Books; Appendix The Development of Type Faces; Books for Further Reading; Index. From the blurb - "Printing has seen great developments in the last thirty years, both in the practice of typography itself and in the study and appraisement of the past. Hence the need for a new edition of this well-known and comprehensive manual, the only one on its subject and a steady seller since its first appearance. It is written for all who are interested in books and printing, amateurs or professionals. Its chapters deal with the history of printed books from the beginning, with production methods and processes, illustration, binding, and the care of books. There are many illustrations, an original appendix describing the development of type design, and a list of books for further reading on every aspect of the subject. Añadir al carritoPrinted wrappers small 4to, 24 cm, 38, {1] pp, [1] folding leaf, ills. Includes a foreword by Euan Phillips. From the introduction: "This is a book about books; to wit, the series of Christmas keepsakes produced by the University Printer at Cambridge between 1930 and 1973 'for his friends in printing and publishing'. They had their origin in that sensational period when a few people were rediscovering the delights of good printing, and celebrating their discovery in books which they themselves conceived, organised and often wrote. Stanley Morison was particularly given to this form of self-indulgence, and Walter Lewis made an enthusiastic ally; the nine Christmas books produced in his time as Printer were engaging ventures in the genre. There was a lull during the war years but in 1947, under Lewis's successor, the practice was resumed. Since then there have been two interruptions, the first in 1959 when a printers' strike in the summer had left too many arrears of customers' work, the second in 1963, the year when a move was made into new buildings. In the gap of 1959 a modest pamphlet had to serve, in which were listed the books produced up till then, with some notes on their contents and presentation. These notes are re-used here with only minor changes, and others have been added to cover subsequent years. " Booklabel of Tatyana and Hans Schmoller on front inside wrapper, Very Good.…

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, 191 pp. From the blurb: "When Brooke Crutchley joined the Cambridge University Press as Walter Lewis's assistant in 1930, he found himself in the midst of the typographical revival which had begun towards the end of the nineteenth century and which gathered fresh impetus in the 1920s. His close association with Lewis, and with Stanley Morison, Oliver Simon, Francis Meynell, Eric Gill, Bruce Rogers and others, enables him to write authentically - and entertainingly - about their working methods and their personalities. Artists come into his story too, among them Gwen Raverat, Reynolds Stone and Edward Ardizzone. After the war, during which he served in the Admiralty, Brooke Crutchley succeeded Lewis as University Printer and in the following years he was absorbed in a search for increased productivity, the building of a new printing house, introducing up-to-date technologies and sparring with printing trade unions. Frequently throughout the book he expresses his ideas on the principles of good typography and he tells of his battles for well-designed lettering in public places. In a chapter on his visits to America he writes of the standards of book design and production as he found them there and about the American printers and publishers whom he met. It is, however, Cambridge, England, which provides most of the background and, incidentally, some engaging sketches of donnish characters of a generation now past."
