The author, a pure African educated in England, discusses themes relating to his experience being an African brought up in the American education system, and his eventual decision to make Liberia his permanent home. In the book, he discusses how the establishment of a strong, black civilization in central Africa is not possible without bloodshed, and advocates for a non-sanguinary evangelization of the continent. He explores the opportunities and challenges of engaging in African commerce, and the facilities, and means black Americans have for doing so. The author believes that self love is as good as any affection whatever, and that this affection can be used to help uplift and enlighten black heathens. He believes that black heathens can be led to salvation and that evangelization is essential. Ultimately, this book advocates for a reoccupation of Africa, both in trade and moral power, by her scattered children in distant lands with the ultimate goal of the redemption of Africa. This book presents a unique and compelling argument for the significance of the English language in the development of a nascent African nation. Written by a prominent figure of his time, the author explores the impact of the language on a specific community of African emigrants and their interactions with the native population. The author provides a detailed analysis of the English language, emphasizing its historical roots in freedom and its close association with Christianity. He argues that the English language, with its inherent power, serves as a bridge to civilization, a tool for progress and enlightenment. The author then delves into the complex dynamics of language acquisition in the context of colonialism and cultural exchange. He highlights the ways in which the English language has become intertwined with trade, politics, and even religious practices in this emerging society. He emphasizes the potential of this language to further unite diverse African tribes under a shared banner of progress and understanding. The book offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate relationship between language, power, and cultural transformation in a crucial period of African history, providing invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of a nation grappling with its identity. This book explores race relations within the backdrop of American history, from the arrival of the first African slaves to the complexities of modern-day race problems. The author argues against dwelling on past injustices, instead encouraging readers to shift towards new ideas and aims for a new era. The book goes on to present three areas for the black community to focus on: the status of the family, the conditions of labor, and the elements of morals, positing that addressing these issues is crucial for progress. The author further argues that the elevation of a people comes primarily from internal qualities and that true grandeur is not found in external factors but in the cultivation of virtues such as chastity and reverence for law. Laced with historical examples and philosophical insights, this book provides a thought-provoking examination of race relations, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for achieving racial equality and harmony. Alexander Crummell (1819-1898) was a New York-born, University of Cambridge-educated, African-American Episcopalian priest. He was a vocal abolitionist and pioneering black nationalist who propagated the idea of Pan-Africanism - i.e. uniting both Africans on the continent and in diaspora - serving for several years as a missionary in Liberia. Publisher's note on final page: "The author of the foregoing Oration is, so far as we know, a person of unmixed African extraction, well known to the Colored People of New York and Boston . Roberts, Benson, McGill and Others have shown that men of African descent may possess eminent political and commercial ability. This Oration proves that they are not incapable of making attainments in literature." Born in New York City, Alexander Crummell was an African-American Episcopalian priest, missionary, and teacher: "One of the truly great black intellectual leaders of the nineteenth century" (Rigsby).
