Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 12mo. pp. x, 140 [ie. 240; pp. 231-240 misnumbered 131-140]. woodcut headpiece & initial. modern quarter roan, gilt back (light foxing to title & stain to lower outer corner through first few gatherings). Third Edition. A member of the Recollet order, Crespel came to Canada in 1724 and served as…a curé at Fort Richelieu (Sorel) and as almoner in various districts of Quebec. In 1728, he accompanied a punitive expedition under Constant Le Marchand de Lignery to the territory west of Lake Michigan (present-day Wisconsin) against the Outagamis (Fox) Indians, who were interfering with French trade there. For the next seven years, he was variously stationed as chaplain at Fort Niagara (near Youngstown, N.Y.), Cataraqui (Kingston, Ont.) and Fort Saint-Frédéric on Lake Champlain. Recalled to France in 1738, he did not return to Quebec until around 1750, when he became provincial commissioner of the Recollets. His appointment, which lasted until his death, spanned a difficult period when British authorities forbade the recruitment of new members. Crespel's simple and brief narrative of his adventures and experiences in Quebec and the Great Lakes region (1724-1738), which also includes a thrilling account of his shipwreck in 1736 off the southern tip of Anticosti Island, was originally published in 1742. The work attained considerable popularity and underwent several reprintings and translations. It is a valuable and authentic account which forms "an important sequel to the earlier relations of Sagard and Le Clercq". (Howes) Bell C565. Dionne II 572. Gagnon II 539. Howes C-880. Lande 162.
