In his introduction, Hives states that he used the grammars of John Horden and J.A. McKay. He acknowledged his debt to Rev. R.B. Horsefield and the Indians of Stanley and Lac la Ronge, and "Finally to Canon Edward Ahenakew for the final revision and correction".
