The author, a famous Portuguese soldier, was colonel of an infantry regiment in Rio de Janeiro, and died there in 1751. He was one of the officers belonging to the entourage of Gomes Freire, and dedicated the Capitão de Infantaria to him. There are long letters of Ribeiro Coutinho in praise of Alpoym in the Exame de Bombeiros, and the Exame de Artilheiros. This work is sumptuously printed and illustrated, and is quite rare».
