Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This second edition of Moral Constraints on War offers a principle-by-principle presentation of the trans-cultural roots of the ethics of war in an age defined by the increasingly international nature of military intervention. Parts one and two trace the evolution of Just War Theory, analyzing the principles of jus ad bellum and jus in bello: the principles that determine under what conditions a war may be started and then conducted. Each chapter provides a historical background of the principle under discussion, an explanation of the principle, and numerous historical examples of its application. In Part three, case studies apply the theories discussed to NATO's humanitarian mission in Kosovo, terrorism and the Iraq War. Bringing together an international coterie of philosophers and political scientists, this accessible and practical guide offers students of military ethics and international relations rich, up-to-the-minute insight into the pluralistic character of Just War Theory.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This third edition of Moral Constraints on War offers a principle by principle presentation of the ethics of war as is found in the age-old tradition of the Just War. Parts one and two trace the evolution of Just War Theory, analyzing the principles of jus ad bellum and jus in bello: the principles that determine the conditions under which it is just to start a war and then conduct military operations. Each chapter provides a historical background of the principle under discussion and an in-depth analysis of its meaning. More so than in the previous editions, there is a special focus on the transcultural nature of the principles. Besides theoretical clarifications, each of the principles is also put to the test with numerous historical and contemporary examples. In Part three, Just War Theory is applied in three specific case studies: the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in World War II, the Korean War (1950-53), and the use of armed drones in the "war on terror." Bringing together an international coterie of philosophers and political scientists, this accessible and practical guide offers both students of military ethics and of international relations rich, up-to-date insights into the pluralistic character of Just War Theory. This book seeks, in concrete historical terms, to deal with the issue of constraining war on the basis of moral principles as found in Just War Theory. As the book makes clear, this theory has its roots in transcultural experiences, concepts, and principles. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. In a world where the traditional territorial organisation of the state is coming under increasing challenge from pressures from above (globalisation) and from below (struggles for federalisation and secession), the theoretical and practical questions concerning secessionist struggles become ever more acute. It is these questions that this volume addresses. Why do some struggles for autonomy take acute forms, above all violent struggles for secession (for example, Chechnya), while others remain within the framework of constitutional politics (for example, Tatarstan and Quebec)? Under what conditions does a distinct political community have the right to secede from another, and how should this process be managed? Our ten case studies seek to answer these questions on the basis of the application of just war theory to the normative and practical issues concerning the secession struggles in these regions. The Introduction sets out the theoretical issues, and then each case study provides a rich mix of theoretical and empirical material, and some of the broader issues are then drawn together in the concluding chapter. The book focuses on four key themes that are central to the ethics of secession. The first examines normative issues, in particular the tension between 'choice' theories and those based on remedial 'just cause' arguments. The second discusses the problem of violence in secessionist struggles and the ensuing relationship between just war theory and the ethics of secession. The third problem is the relationship between nationhood and citizenship, and in particular the problem of applying what has now become a conventional distinction between ethnic and civic representations of the political community. Finally, the contentious issue of sovereignty and the way that it frames debates about self-determination. With each of these themes, the application of general moral principles to particular historical contexts opens up new avenues of research. This book is essential reading for those who wish to understand both the theoretical and practical issues concerning secession struggles in the world today.…

Condición: very good. Brussels, Belgium : VUB Brussels University Press, 2002. Paperback. 308 pp. Stamp. - The contributions to this book analyse processes of secession in terms of the complex relations between political action and scientific knowledge. In secessionist crises, opposing concepts of nation-building clash, as do divergent interpretations of society and history. The book compares the intellectual responses given to the question of secession according to differing national contexts. The first field of enquiry concerns the relation between scholars and political practitioners. The institutional setting in which scientific research is carried out may ether force researchers to depend on the state or favour their autonomy. The second field of enquiry concerns the respective contributions of various scientific disciplines to debates ons secession: scientific knowledge may highlight identities rooted in the past, support present grievances or develop blueprints for the future. The thierd question has to do with the criteria of scientific objectivity and truthfulness as used in discourses for, against and on secession. The volume is aimed at an interdisciplinary audience. With its in-depth analysis both of the legitimising discourses of secessionist movements and of questions of methodology in history and the social sciences, it is relevant for researchers and students of history, politics and international relations. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9789054873129. Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCE HISTORY.…
