Best-known as a member of the Bauhaus School in Chicago, where he was a student and subsequently an esteemed colleague of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Lerner photographed between 1935 and 1940 the legendary Maxwell Street in Chicago, "the world's largest flea market", a document of the Great Depression as well as Chicago's resilient spirit as a city. "Offers a remarkably rich vision of how people struggled and made do in an era of adversity, a vision that ranges from anguish and despair through laughter, low comedy, and high spirits. Lerner's Maxwell Street is thoroughly human.
