Paper Covered Boards. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Title: Documents of the Virginia General Assembly: Called Session, 1863 & Session of 1863-1864 Author: Virginia General Assembly (Confederate Imprint) Publisher: William F. Ritchie, Public Printer, Richmond, VA (1863) Rare Confederate Imprint: A Primary Record of the Seceded South An exceptional primary source for historians and collectors of the American Civil War, this volume contains the official legislative documents from the Virginia General Assembly during the critical years of 1863 and 1864. Published in the Confederate capital of Richmond, this collection offers a rare, "inside look" at the administrative and military concerns of the South as the war reached its zenith. Bibliographic Significance: This volume is definitively identified in the standard bibliography of Confederate literature as Parrish & Willingham, 4399. It includes: Called Session of 1863: 19 documents. Session of 1863-1864: 34 documents. Pagination: Various (as issued). Condition Report: This copy is bound in its original paper-covered boards with a cloth spine. Consistent with the scarcity of materials in the wartime South, the boards show wear along the edges and the cloth is lightly soiled. The original paper spine label remains present and readable, though it shows some chipping?a rare survival for this type of binding. The binding is remarkably tight and secure. Internally, the documents are in Very Good condition, free of significant foxing or dampstaining, maintaining the crispness of the original wartime printing. A foundational piece for any serious collection of Virginia history or Confederate government imprints. [Store Location: 1.3].

Paperback. Folio. Self-cover. 4pp. Good only. Age toned and somewhat soiled, with a couple of centerfold edge tears. Overall quite respectable looking, though, with no edge chips. Decent full issue of this Confederate newspaper from the capital, dated several months prior to the Confederate government's evacuation in early April and the subsequent burning and occupation by Union troops. Typical late war news. Some wear issues, but easily legible and quite "handleable" -- very uncommon in any condition. Southern newspapers were generally printed on inferior quality paper, hence usually exhibit more age toning than their Northern counterparts.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Hardcover. Rebound in gray cloth - an attractive institutional-type binding. Gold lettering on the spine. The letters LC embossed neatly on the title page. A few pencil notation on the copyright page. 379 pages + 73 page appendix. Binding is good and tight and crisp. Text block good and tight. Pages slightly toned from age, but overall very good. The Appendix of the Secret Session is where the state states "[the people of Virginia] do further declare that said constitution of the United States of America is no longer binding on any of the citizens of this state." It goes on to establish a Virginia Army and Navy and outline the laws of the state government. By April of 1861, the 7 southernmost states had already seceded from the Union. It was not until Fort Sumpter in April that Virginia officially seceded -- this publication is the official enactment and publication of that secession, printed that same year.
