First edition. The journal of a nobleman visiting Brighton. With four full page engraved lithographs by Engelmann. Later half leather binding, with marbled boards. Gilt titles to the spine. The spine and gilt is somewhat rubbed, but the binding is sound. New end papers. Original green soft covers are bound in. These are slightly… darkened, and there is the loss of a corner to the front cover. Half title. Frontis engraving of the Brighton pavillion (This was a relatively new building at the time, having been completed in the form presented by John Nash in 1822. The frontis engraving is moderately foxed. The rest of the book is lightly foxed / darkened, but the plates are clean. Plates are: Brunswick Terrace, (completed 1826 - curiously, the plate is attributed to Edward Finden after William Westall, c.1830 by the Regency Plates collection); Kemp Town. (the structure shown was begun in 1823 and not completed until 1855); and Brighton pier (This is the suspension chain pier, opened in 1823, and destroyed in a storm in 1896). 408 pages. 22cm x 15cm. Comte A. de La Garde refers to Auguste Louis Charles, le Comte de la Garde (1783?), a French aristocrat, author, poet, translator, lyricist, and man of letters. He survived the French Revolution and the subsequent wars, traveling extensively across Europe and keeping detailed diaries of his experiences. In 1827, he visited Brighton, England, and wrote a series of insightful and often humorous articles about his stay, which were published anonymously in the Athenaeum magazine and later compiled as Vignettes of a trip to Brighton (Brighton; scènes détachées d'un voyage en Angleterre). .

"Seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe. ? Kaum bekannte Reisebriefe des liebenswürdigen Kosmopoliten, dessen Erinnerungen "Fêtes et souvenirs du Congrès de Vienne" (1843) bis heute als glänzende Sitten- und Kulurgeschichte ihre Leser finden. Graf de La Garde (1783-1853) kam unter die Obhut von Marquis de Chambonas, Oberhaupt der Famili…e, und wurde mit der später so berühmten Madame Récamier erzogen. 1792 wurde sein Ziehvater Minister von Louis XVI. Als Royalist musste er während der Schreckenszeit untertauchen und verließ schließlich mit seinen Schützlingen Frankreich. 1801 kehrte der junge de la Garde nach entbehrungsreichen Jahren in der Verbannung (Hamburg, Schweden und Dänemark) nach Frankreich zurück, um wieder in den Besitz der Familiengüter zu kommen, was ihm aber nicht gelang. Er fand Zutritt zur Familie Napoleons, wurde mit diplomatischen Missionen betraut und fand in dem Fürsten de Ligne einen väterlichen Freund. In Polen gehörte er zum Kreise der schönen verw. Gräfin Sophie Potocka, die er in Prosa und Liedern anbetete. Er war überall ein gern gesehener Gast, auch Ehrenbürger der Republik Krakau; die Könige von Bayern, Preußen und Sachsen korrespondierten mit ihm und die Königin Hortense vertonte seine Lieder. Graf de la Garde "erzählt als Weltmann für Weltleute, von dem Pomp und Wohlleben einzelner Begünstigten in einer Erdstrecke, die uns bisher hauptsächlich nur durch die Uncultur ihres Bodens und ihrer wenigen, armseligen Einwohner bekannt war. Die Lustschlösser in der Ukraine, die Bälle in Kiow, die lustige Wirthschaft während einer wüthenden Pestseuche in Odessa, das gesellschaftliche Leben der reichen Griechen und alt eingewohnten Franken in Constantinopel, sind Gegenstände, welche außer der Beobachtung ernster Reisenden liegen, die ungelehrte, nur Zeitvertreib suchende Leser aber anziehen und in manchen von ihnen Neugier nach der näheren Kenntniß jener Länder anregen." ( 1824 ), in-8°, oblong format, 19 x 26,5 cm, (6)nn pp ( aquatint title , aquatint portrait, engraved facsimile of the Hortense's handwriting) + 15 pp + (48) nn pp (complete). Bound in contemporary red half roan, boards covered with marbled paper, smooth spine decorated… with some gilt lines and with the intitials ''L.N.'' beneath a crown with 8 pearls. Binding with some wear, top and lower end of spine with some loss of leather, joints weak and partially split, interior with some foxing. In all still an acceptable copy with a technically sound binding. The last part of the book (48 nn pp ) consists of 12 full page aquatint engraving made by W. Read of drawings made by Hortense. The opposite page contains an engraving with the text and the score of a song composed by Hortense. Rare, we found only two copies in the OCLC catalogue ( British Library OCLC n° 498851957 - and in a Leipzig library). There was another edition in 1832 published by Colburn & Bentley which is more frequently found. The preface and the biography are written ( in French) by Count A.L.C. de Lagarde). The initials on the spine pose an identification problem. Could they be of L[ouis] N[apoleon], the future French emperor Napoleon III and son of the author ?[ Hortense - queen of Holland - Songs - Music - French - 19th c. ].

She was married off to Napoleon's brother, Louis, who was made the king of Holland during the years 1806 to 1810. Significantly for… this particular production, Hortense was the mother of Louis Napoleon, also known as Napoleon III, who at the time this opulent work was published, was the ruler of France, which thus explains the opulent commemoration of her here, as evident in the use of gold in its printing! Hortense was, in fact, of an artistic bent, and so contained herein are examples of her painting and musical compositions. There are six plates engraved by F. Sorrieu after paintings by Hortense and 24 pages of musical score by her (lyrics by the Comte de la Garde). Includes letters written by Hortense and a biography by Hippolyte Prevost. The gorgeous chromolithographs, seven in all, were done by Lemercier. Leather is rubbed and scuffed. Foxing, heavy in a few places, generally because of the card or paper.
