Diventato un ubriacone e perso tutto il suo denaro, Jon lascia Peer e sua madre. Peer vuole recuperare l'onore e le ricchezze che il padre ha dilapidato, ma si perde spesso in sogni a occhi… aperti e si trascina per la maggior parte del tempo senza far nulla. Viene coinvolto in una rissa e diventa un fuorilegge. Quindi fugge dal suo paese e durante la fuga incontra prima tre giovani vedove e poi una donna vestita di verde, la figlia del re dei troll, che lo vuole sposare. Solveig (o Solvejg), che Peer aveva incontrato a un matrimonio e di cui si era innamorato, lo raggiunge presso la capanna di lui nella foresta per vivere insieme, ma Peer la lascia e si mette in viaggio. Rimane lontano per diversi anni, calandosi in diversi ruoli e occupazioni, incluso quello di uomo d'affari impegnato in una spedizione sulle coste del Marocco. Vaga attraverso il deserto, passa il Memnone e la Sfinge, diventa anche un capo beduino e un profeta. Prova a sedurre Anitra, figlia di un beduino, e finisce segregato in un manicomio al Cairo, dove viene salutato come imperatore. Infine, ormai vecchio, sulla strada di ritorno a casa fa naufragio. Tra i passeggeri incontra il Passeggero Sconosciuto (considerato da alcuni studiosi il fantasma di Lord Byron) che vuole usare il cadavere di Peer per scoprire dove si trovano i sogni.
