Condición: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: Schnitt und Einband etwas angeschmutzt, leichte Lagerspuren/minor shelfwear, slightly soiled. A Study of Literary Influence. The study demonstrates in detail the extent of the influence of Juvenal on the works of the French poet and satirist Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. Pointing to Boileau's First, Fifth, Sixth and Tenth Satire, Colton shows that Boileau borrows themes from Juvenal and reworks them, adding touches of his own and couching the new passages in language that is less strident and less shocking, more dignified and more restrained. Nevertheless he succeeds in elegantly revitalizing some of the most memorable passages from the pen of Rome's most brilliant satirist. 108 Seiten, broschiert (Studien zur Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft; Band 1/Olms Verlag 1987). From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In his Eighth Satire, a poem addressed to the Abbé de Beaulieu, Mathurin Régnier (1573-1613) describes an encounter with a man who, after forcing his presence on him, refused to go away. The present article will examine those passages in the poem which bear a resemblance to passages in Horaces famous poem about his meeting a bore who was eager to gain, through the poet, an introduction to his patron Maecenas. kart. Condición: Gut. 108 S. ; 21 cm; Gutes Ex. - Englisch. - The present study demonstrates in detail the extent of the influence of Juvenal on the works of the French poet and satirist Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux (1636-1711). Boileau displays an astonishing familiarity with the writings of his famed predecessor in the field of satire. The influence of Juvenal is strongest in four of Boileau's poems. Satire 1, on Paris as an unsuitable abode for a virtuous and impecunious poet, is based on Juvenal 3 and 7; Satire 5, on true nobility, is modeled on Juvenal 8; Satire 6, a description of the annoyances and the dangers of city life, is inspired by Juvenal 3; and Satire 10, on the folly of marriage, is an imitation of Juvenal 6. Boileau borrows themes from Juvenal and reworks them, adding touches of his own and couching the new passages in language that is less strident and less shocking, more dignified and more restrained, than that of his models. Nevertheless he succeeds in elegantly revitalizing some of the most memorable passages from the pen of Rome's most brilliant satirist. // INHALT : Preface. --- List of Abbreviations. --- Chapter I: The First Satire and The Sixth Satire. --- Chapter II: The Fifth Satire. --- Chapter III: The Tenth Satire. --- Chapter IV: The Other Satires. --- Chapter V: Discourse on Satire and The Art of Poetry --- Chapter VI: Summary and Conclusion. --- Notes. --- Bibliography. --- Indexes. --- 1. kart. Condición: Gut. 154 S. ; 21 cm; Gutes Ex.; Einband stw. geringfügig berieben. - Englisch. - Beiliegend Widmungskarte d. Verfassers. / This book, a close examination of some works of two major Seventeenth-Century French poets, Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux and Jean de La Fontaine, strives to illuminate their indebtedness to the writings of certain Latin authors. In seven chapters, the influence of Horace on Boileau's satires and epistles is studied. We also observe Boileau's familiarity with Persius' satires and with one of Martial's most famous epigrams. Three chapters demonstrate the fabulist La Fontaine's employment of material from Horace. The influence of Ovid's Metamorphoses is clear in La Fontaine's retelling of two of the finest stories that have come down to us from antiquity, "Philemon and Baucis" and "Pyramus and Thisbe". The collection concludes with a study of La Fontaine's brilliant versified version ofPetronius' story of the Widow of Ephesus. // INHALT : Preface -- An Echo of Horace in Boileau's Sixth Satire -- Boileau's Seventh Satire and Horace -- Echoes of Horace in Boileau's Eighth Satire -- Boileau's Fifth Epistle and Horace -- Echoes of Horace in Boileau's Sixth Epistle -- Horace, Serm. 1.10.73-91 and Boileau, Epitre 7.87-106 -- Horace, Epist. 1.20 and Boileau's Tenth Epistle -- Echoes of Persius in Boileau -- Martial and Boileau on the Incompetent Physician -- La Fontaine, Fables 1.3, Horace, Serm. 2.3, Phaedrus 1.24 -- La Fontaine and Horace: Fables 1.9 and Sermones 2.6.79-117 -- Philemon and Baucis in Ovid and La Fontaine -- Horace, Epist. 1.10.32-33 and La Fontaine, Philemon et Baucis 7-10 -- Pyramus and Thisbe in Ovid and La Fontaine -- The Story of the Widow of Ephesus in Petronius and La Fontaine -- General Index Index of Scholars.
