SB ivi+238pp + 3 maps.Published Price £14.50 Like the Dunkirk campaign in 1940, General Sir John Mooreâs advance and retreat from and to Corunna in the early stages of the Peninsular War, was a defeat that has acquired in hindsight all the glorious aura of a famous victory. This was largely due to Mooreâs own heroic death at the climax of the campaign; but as Churchill remarked after Dunkirk, âWars are not won by evacuationsâ and any reader of these revealing diaries will be left in no doubt that Corunna was a calamitous defeat for Britain at the hands of a confident, competent French force. The author of these journals - first published in 1913 - was Captain Alexander Gordon, a Scottish aristocrat - (he was the son of the Earl of Aberdeen) - who wrote them up from notes he made at the conclusion of the campaign when the events he describes so vividly were still fresh in his mind. Although a Hussar, the conditions during the retreat on Corunna were so chaotic that Gordon, as he puts it âEnjoyed opportunities of becoming acquainted with the situation and general movements of the [whole] armyâ. His journals cover the complete campaign - from Mooreâs unwise advance into Spainâs interior in an effort to link up with Spanish armies; his encounter with the French under Napoleon himself; and his fighting retreat on the port of Corunna where the Royal Navy was waiting to rescue them. The climax was the pitched battle of Corunna itself, during which Moore was killed by a cannon ball in his chest. The British army of 16,000 succeeded in holding the numerically equivalent French at bay until they had embarked, inflicting 2,000 deaths for their own losses of 900 men. But - as at Dunkirk - they had to abandon much of their equipment o the enemy, including 20,000 muskets. In retrospect it is probably fortunate that by the time of the battle, Napoleon had left Spain to meet an Austrian threat, leaving the battle to the cautious Marshal Soult. This is a valuable eye-witness account of an often overlooked campaign by a perceptive and informed professional observer. IIlustrated with maps and a portrait of the author.

SB. xvi + 420pp with 17maps and numerous plates.Published Price £25 A suitably massive history for a regiment with an enormous reputation. This volume covers the huge range of the Green Howardsâ (the Yorkshire Regimentâs) Great War campaigns - and takes the narrative beyond the war to post-war campaigns in Afghanistan and the intervention against the Russian revolution. Compiled from diaries, letters and interviews with survivors as well as from official diaries, reports and logs, this is a classic Regimental history of a famous unit which, as general Edward Bulfin, the Green Howardsâ Colonel-in-Chief modestly writes: âFought on almost every front, and pulled their weightâ. The regimentâs 1st battalion was on garrison duty in India; while the 2nd battalion landed in France in time for the first battle of Ypres in November 1914. Other Green Howard battalions fought in Flanders; France; Italy; Gallipoli; as well as serving in Russia, the Balkans; Palestine; Syria and Mesopotamia. The cost was high - but, as an appendix listing the 12 Victoria Crosses won by the Green Howards in the war testifies, the record was proud.

SB. xx + 420pp with 14 maps and numerous illustrations.Published Price £26 The Loyal North Lancs is one of the proudest names among British Army Regiments, and this massive history is a fitting memorial to their performance in the Great War. The Regiment served in virtually every theatre - the Western Front; Gallipoli; Egypt; Palestine; East Africa and Macedonia; - and this book tells the story of them all. The First Battalion of the regiment were in at the first - taking part in the defence of Ypres at Langemarck and Gheluvelt; and were in at the finish - participating in the breaking of the HIndenburg LIne. IN between, they fought at the battles of Neuve Chapelle and Aubers RIdge in 1915; the Somme in 1916; and the battles of Arras and Passchendaele in 1917. The 2nd Battalion was sent to East Africa and took part in the disastrous attack on Tanga and the subsequent frustrating campaign against that guerilla leader of genius, General Von Lettow-Vorbeck. Towards the end of the war, the battalion served in Egypt, Palestine and on the western front. The regimentâs 1st/4th and 2nd/4th (territorial) battalions fought at Festubert in 1915 and then on the Somme and in the Ypres salient and Passchendale, and took part in the breaking of the HIndenburg line. A comprehensive, plainand unvarnished history of the regimentâs huge contribution to the world war, this book, fully illustrated with maps and photos, and with appendices covering awards, uniforms, colours and honours, is a book that all lovers of Lancashire and all interested in the history of the Great War will treasure.

Añadir al carritoCondición: New. 2002 N & M Press reprint (original 1928). HB. 215pp with seven b/w plates and five maps (the large map of Mesopotamia shown in the list of maps is not reproduced) Despite its title, this history begins the story of the regiment from where Webbâs history (1688 -1910) finishes and takes it on to the end of 1927, though the bulk of the book is, of course, devoted to the Great War. Each battalion is treated separately. There are no Rolls of Honour nor lists of Honours and Awards, but casualties are given in the text following periods of action, officers by name, other ranks by totals. Gallantry awards are also described in the text with recipients named. Details of drafts joining the battalions are also given as they occur, again officers by name, other ranks by totals and, very useful, officers serving in the battalions at various specified times are listed. When war broke out the 1st Battalion was stationed in Fermoy, Ireland, part of 16th Brigade, 6th Division, which arrived in France, the last of the original six regular divisions to do so, in the first half of September 1914, and joined the BEF on the Aisne. The battalion remained on the Western Front in 6th Division for the whole of the war. It fought at First Ypres, Hooge, the Somme, Hill 70, Cambrai and during the German offensives of 1918 it was in action at St Quentin, Bailleul, Kemmel and the Scherpenberg; during the final advance to victory it took part in various actions. Total dead amounted to 41 officers 987 other ranks. After the war the battalion served in BAOR and in 1920 it was sent to Athlone, S Ireland, at the time of the âtroublesâ when it suffered several casualties, including the COâs wife, wounded in an ambush. In 1923 the battalion moved to Aldershot, and in January 1925 it went to Egypt. In November 1927 the battalion sailed for India where it took over the garrison in Kamptee, Central Provinces. The 2nd Battalion was in Ranikhet, India, in August 1914 and went to France with the Indian Corps in the Meerut Division in which it served throughout the war. It fought on the Western Front from October 1914 till November 1915, winning a VC at Neuve Chapelle. In November 1915 the Meerut Division left France for Mesopotamia where the battalion arrived in the first week of December 1915. For the next two years it fought in many actions in Mesopotamia including the reoccupation of Kut and the capture of Baghdad in 1917. At the end of 1917 the division was moved to Palestine where it fought its final battles at Megiddo in September 1918. Total battalion dead numbered 33 officers and 1030 other ranks. In July 1919 it was sent to India where it served for the next four years in Delhi and Jhansi. In October 1923 it went to Khartoum in response to unrest in the Sudan involving Egyptian and Sudanese troops.

SB. xii+234pp,+36 illustrations (two in colour) +five maps in colour.Published Price £22 The title tells the origins of the battalion. It was raised in India in 1661 by the Hon East india Company as four companies to provide the garrison for Bombay. In 1862 it was transferred to the Crown as the 103rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Bombay Fusiliers). In the Cardwell reforms of 1881 it became the 2nd Battalion of the newly formed Royal Dublin Fusiliers (RDF); the 1st Battalion of the new regiment had been the Royal Madras Fusiliers. This volume is concerned principally with the battalionâs service in the Great War during which it fought on the Western Front in 10th Brigade, 4th Division till the end of 1916 when it was transferred to 48th Brigade of 16th(Irish) Division. It was the CO of this battalion, Lt Col Mainwaring, who, along with the CO of 1st R Warwicks, Lt Col Elkington, signed a document of surrender at St Quentin on 27th August 1914 during the retreat from Mons, in order to spare the town. The situation was saved by Major Tom Bridges, 4th Dragoon Guards, who managed to assemble the men and march them out. The two COs were coutmartialled and cashiered. Elkington joined the Foreign Legion and was later reinstated, Mainwaring disappeared from history and died in 1930. At the end of the war the battalion went to Constantinople and from there to India (Multan) where it was when the order came for the disbandment of the five Southern Irish infantry regiments. The last part gives a very full and often moving description of the disbandment of the battalion. 269 officers and 4508 WOs, NCOs and men of the Regiment died during the war and an appendix lists the names of the officers showing which battalion they were serving in. There is a full list of Honours and Awards including Mentions in Despatches and foreign awards for the whole regiment. Another appendix lists the officers of the 1st and 2nd battalions serving at the time of disbandment and shows which regiments they transferred to or whether they retired. One appendix is a copy of the Regimentâs entry in Army List of July 1922, the last published before disbandment.
